Hello to all the forum users. My name is John McDonald and I have a hobby of family history which has brought me to this informative community. My grandfather was James McDonald. He was a builder and so did not start until later in the war. he joined the 15th Scottish Reconnaissance Corps and was an Ammunition Corporal (who also drove a vehicle) He was a truly great grandad and human being but seldom talked about the war. I have found most things about him via war diaries and other records. I am of course proud of the citation for his Military Medal. My avatar is him and Monty. Looking forward to catching up with all. John
Welcome to the forum Hope this is correct. I'm sure you have it already, just in case. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C9362768
John welcome to the forum. Great to have another Recce on board. Do you have anything you can share about your Grandad, photos etc? Cheers Paul

Hi John You should be very proud, great MM writeup. I presume you also have his service records? If not you should apply for them. regards Robert
Welcome to the forum. Your Grandad did well for someone from the recce , described recently on here as ''not a fighting unit''.
I recommend they read the book by Tim Chamberlin - full of graphic first hand accounts. First published in 1950. I know the Recce's main focus was on finding out and testing enemy strength and positions so I can understand that point of view but they saw plenty from what I have read.
Perhaps the commentary about the main role of the unit could be better taken to the thread in which it was first brought up, and not continued on an intro thread? That way the veteran who explained himself elsewhere, (and for info, has been in contact with other Recce relatives on this forum for some years) would be better placed to see any counter arguments.
