STALAG XXA is/was in the centre of Poland and the first camp british POWs have seen in 1940. From there, depending on the needs, the POWs were moved accordingly. Some to work camps, officers to an Offizier Lager (OFLAG) Stefan.
Couple of points Word of caution best not to assume the Pic does not show `all just RNF` there are RA men there too possibly more regiments and corps. All RNF (or any other regiment /corps) were not all sent to one particular camp they were dispersed throughout. As he was repatriated he will not appear in Prisoners of War Germany unless someone has a 1942 edition (most I have seen are 43 and 44-45 lists ?) With so many threads on one subject it is impossible to keep up with information and you may find posters giving up with you losing out on valuable information? Fusilier William Gibb regimental number was 4272331 (WO 417/93) I do`nt think this was mentioned (it may be on another thread) but there may be a surviving PoW card WO 416 Series; German Index cards of British and Commonwealth Prisoners of War ? Good Luck Kyle
The Discovery Catalogue isnt the easiest to navigate and I can only seem to achieve results A-E but here`s a few other RNF captured at St Valery just to show different camps if nothing else;- Reference: WO 416/7/189 Description: Name: James Bell Anderson. That’s a good post from Kyle but I’d caution against going down the direct TNA route for the POW Index records (which used to be free under Freedom of Information Act) as I know from another members posts that a TNA fee of £23 was required for the “simple” Index Card which in my father’s case told me less than the Red Cross told me - and I had to wait for almost 13 months to get a reply from Switzerland under the “old system” - I’d once again advise you to apply to the next Red Cross when the next window opens via the online application form. It may even be the case that as your relative was repatriated in 1943 his German POW papers were not amongst those seized from the German archive in 1945 and now held at Kew - but there will undoubtedly be a Red Cross record. Steve
I too am becoming confused as to which thread I need to focus my attantion on, but to try and help out here then searching the TNA for details that may help you resolve the story of your relative there is a file you might need to look at - [there may be other files I have not delved to any great depth] Repatriation of prisoners of war from Germany, 19 October 1943 | The National Archives Reference: ADM 358/1844 Description: Repatriation of prisoners of war from Germany, 19 October 1943 Date: 1943 Jan 01 - 1943 Dec 31 Held by: The National Archives, Kew Former reference in its original department: CW(C) 552/43 Legal status: Public Record(s) Closure status: Open Document, Open Description Access conditions: Open on Transfer Record opening date: 19 October 2012 I have not gone back and checked the other threads and have made the assumption [rightly or wrongly] the he was repatriated sometime in 1943 TD
Yes he was repatriated in 1943. I assumed you asked for information which is relative to the name of the the forum like ie POW. Otherwise I would have posted all under the general forum. Thanks for the info
