In Ontario, we had a Jan. 1/18 increase of the minimum wage rose from $11.60 to $14. Next year it will hit $15—an overall increase of 32 per cent in one year. Too soon to tell the the outcome and predictably, two widely divergent predictions of either nirvana or catastrophe. Having managed a P&L for most of the past 38 years I can tell you that absorbing a 32% increase in labour costs over 12 months will cause unanticipated pain for all involved. My guess is that many students won't be getting summer jobs this year.
