He started off in 560th (Hampshire) Army Troop Company Royal Engineers; this was basically a field company used as Army troops. One part of it says he was a Brigade Major attached to the Portuguese Expeditionary Force, which is quite interesting. Have you tried the London Gazette site?

Ah yes the story I heard was that he was in charge of the Portuguese when they bolted due to a gas attack
