Went to see it this evening.
I read some concerns elsewhere about the amount of gore, etc. If you don't like that sort of thing, for sustained periods, you might not like this. IMO it's not gratuitous, it's pertinent.

I was eventually left cold over what I felt was the somewhat predictably-timed realistic action 'slotted' into Fury, but was genuinely drawn 'into the moment' with this film.

Generally speaking - when a film opens with "true story", my stomach sinks, just a little. Reading up on his exploits - it may not do him full justice, but for a film it's more than fair. Don't expect much insight into conscientious 'participation' though, this is about one individual.

I've read that the director (Mel Gibson) intentionally left out many exploits/incidents that Desmond Doss performed. He felt that the audience would be shaking their heads in disbelieve over them, thinking that "not even Superman" could've pulled off those events. And over the years I've read many many Medal of Honor citations in the past, but without a doubt Desmond Doss earned his many times over, and was alive when he was awarded it. Many, if not most MoHs were awarded posthumously in the latter part of WW2.

Here's a point that might be of interest to movie goers and American movie haters in the UK. The actor who plays Desmond Doss is British. The movie was filmed in Australia, so all of the other actors were Aussies. The only American actor in the movie was Vince Vaughn.

    Hi
    Great movie in my opinion.
Do some googling on him as well, the story on him is amazing.
He certainly stood up for his values and faith.

    regards

Vince Vaughn? Why would Gibson engage?

Just curious why Gibson would have wanted V.V. in the movie. He is more known for his comedic roles. Wedding Crasher was hilarious.

There is a school of thought that comedy is harder than tragedy, so there's no reason why comedians aren't capable of doing serious stuff.

I can't find anything definitive about his casting as Sgt. Howell, but looking at his page on IMDB he seems as of late to be venturing out of his comfort zone of comedy and dabbling in drama as of late. Nothing wrong with updating your resume eh!

    Copy that, A-58.
I think he had a part in the Physco remake. Definitely not a comedy.

Just on Netflix now. Might be worth a a watch. I lasted until it went all Hollywood. the silly Wannabe Saving Private Ryan fight scene, with the Michael Bay style petroleum explosions, the flame thrower being used over the heads of the front line, BAR being used like Tommy gun on full auto, mowing down the enemy Rambo style, Meat shields, really? Did we really need the Drill sergeant Full metal Jacket rip off, surprised the actor did it, so cheesy. 3/10.

I finally got around to watching it last week & was disappointed.
Laughed at the barracks scene when matey gets a knife in the foot though.
Didn't go much on the combat scenes, thought they were better in The Pacific.

One thing my son & I asked was why didn't the Japanese just cut the cargo net off the cliff face ?
Going back to that article I posted awhile back , they overdid the size of it in the film.

Best thing about it is that it gets people to look into the real story .
