Hi guys was wondering if any one can help me out please On Cockermouth War memorial with which i am researching i have came stuck with a H W GREEN and by his name he has MM which i am assuming is Military Medal. Any information will be appreciated. Michael.
Searched for ''H Green'' and ''MM'' , only 1 that fits, other one was from Worcestershire. CWGC - Casualty Details
Have searched ancestary Owen for this chap and he was from Wigan so far no connection to Cockermouth but will keep digging cheers. Michael.
Someone has already set up a website about the Cockermouth War Memorial: Roll of Honour- Cumberland - Cockermouth According to the person who has written the text for that site the H.W. Green listed has the letters 'MC' behind the name. If correct, this would indicate the fellow was an officer as only officers would get the Military Cross in WW1. Personally, I feel it will need at least one other piece of evidence to provide a successful lead. Have you been through the index of burials in the Cockermouth Cemetery for 1914 - 1920 to see if someone with this name was interred there? He could have died during the war but died, 'technically' speaking, as a civilian. H.W. Green may not, of course, be listed by the CWGC even if he died during WW1. There are a number of other service people who died in these circumstances buried in cemeteries throughout Cumbria. Despite what is written on their website about these sort of cases they are not always particularly helpful in adding the person to the list of the war dead. Anyway, good luck.
Hi Deacs It looks like I have found him, Herbert William Green ,in 1911 census born 1883 Dean, Cumberland, living in Cockermouth. From his MIC he was in Scots Guards as a Private initally then promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. KIA 10.12.17. But he got MM, probably before promotion. His wife claimed medals and her address is Cockermouth. Here he is on CWGC - CWGC - Casualty Details Anyway for your information regards Robert
2nd Lt H.W. Green may be listed on the Dean village memorial. I remember that in early 2012 there was a couple originally from Dean but now living in Cockermouth who were researching the casualties listed on the Dean memorial. Perhaps if you contcted the Dean Parish Council they might be able to put you in touch with them. Now we all know the answer it is easier to understand how the MM / MC discrepancy has arisen! Also, note that the CWGC has listed his date of death as 12 October 1917 rather than 10 December 1917 indicated by BOFORS. This is assuming of course the date has been written according to the British convention rather than the American way - dd/mm/yy. Have you many other casualties still to positively identify?

Hi Michael One more thing to prove we have the right man - his MM card is on National Archives, but you have to pay to download it- Medal card of Green, H Corps: Scots... | The National Archives Well I think it is his. Service number 12116. See what you come up with. Tried to find him in the London Gazette, but no go. With the date on the card, it should be easy! Interestingly NA have his MIC as 12115- Medal card of Green, Herbert William ... | The National Archives Ancestry has 12116, but its a bit hard to read with the writing over it. regards Robert
Hi Jos I have just been looking through some of my pictures and I had forgot that I had taken a photo of Dean's memorial and guess what he is remembered on there aswell. Regards Michael.
Not bad. It is not easy to read the names on the Dean memorial. Do you still have anyone listed on the Cockermouth War Memorial (WW1 or WW2) to identify?
Yes a couple of WW1 casualtys and some I am not to sure of that is why I was wanting to see if Cockermouth library could assist.
