    Army Number Block Allocations

    Block for Essex Regiment 5998001 - 6076000

Your man's number 6021818 falls into that block , shows he enlisted into the Essex but may have been posted elsewhere afterwards.

It's strange that the Service Number 6021818 is shown on the Find My Past Casualty records as being allocated to D P Crowley 2/5 Essex Regt who was taken POW in the Western Desert in 1942

The red disc appears to show 6021878 !

...and we wonder sometimes how casualties could be misidentified !

6021818 was D P CROWLEY of the 2/5th Essex Regiment. He appears to have been a pow. No record for 6021878. Sorry to duplicate Horsa Passenger's message.

I wonder if these were replacement discs or if he really went through the conflict without realising that one of his discs was stamped with an incorrect number ? I find that hard to believe as every ex-serviceman that I've met could could quote his service number without even thinking about it.

As mentioned by Owen I have his Army Book 64, also his release book which has him as discharged from 5th Essex and he was a signaller.

Out of interest what other site are these on? might be mixing these up but I'm fairly sure when I bought the AB64 etc it also came with his dog tags but the seller on Ebay came back saying she had misplaced them

Currently overseas, but when I get back to Blighty next week I will have the 2/5th Essex War Diaries for '41 & '42 (until they were overrun).

Will check that and the regimental history and get back to you.

Edit: Nothing in the regimental history or my smatterings of 2/5 Essex material - will check the diaries next week-ish.

From site "Rotherham I Remember when " -
I believe they came from his dad, he's he reason my hubby chucks stuff, his dad was a hoarder...
It's not a family name, so not idea where they came from, but probably from the midlands area (Birmingham and Black Country).
I was wondering if these are miners chits? Part of my brain thinks they probably are... but I'm unsure.

    Hope this helps Alistair
