I remember reading somewhere of a story of an RAF pilot during the Battle of Britain who was scared to engage the enemy and used to fire his guns into the Channel before flying back to base. Has anybody else heard of this? Or can enlighten to the Squadron this airman belonged to? Thanks.
I don't have any information on the pilot but was wondering if the RAF used gun cameras in 1940 and if the pilots had any manual control over them. Film of him firing into the water might prove awkward.

Spitfire camera gun 1940 operates with firing button - provided the camera switch is ON: (1940) A.P. 1565B Pilot's Notes for Spitfire II Aeroplane
