Yarmouth area on 11/5/43, whilst looking up a marker in Caister churchyard, which had 2 dated 11/5/43, on the CWGC site it added 4 more, 4 were ATS, and 2 soldier's. So could it have been a traffic accident, bombing raid,? any help appreciated, regards, dave...
As far as I can make out there was a German aircraft raid on Great Yarmouth on 11 May 1943 when a direct hit on their quarters killed 26 ATS members. More details on this link......... http://www.gorlestonhistory.org.uk/worldwars/warinyarmouth.php
Bombs dropped in Gt Yarmouth and surrounding area, 11th May 1943. Caister on sea. 1 High Explosive and Machine gunned. Filby. MG Gt Yarmouth. 14 HE Hemsby. 1 HE Mautby. MG Ormesby St Margaret with scratby. 2 HE Ormesby St Michael. MG Winterton. 1 HE, MG. Several civilians were also killed including two 5 year old boys.
Thanks, that's another of the list. Incrediable where this is leading, from the graves registration report for this ATS girl, now I,m searching for 2 Luftwaffa airmen, and 2 navy sailor's, one of whom as Oberst as rank which is army or airforce yet he is listed as navy. so that is my next avenue to explore... regards, dave...
Dave thread here about it 26 ATS personnel died as a result of a bombing raid on Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 11th May 1943 when the hotel that they were billeted in recieved a direct hit, 25 are recorded as died on that day and one other, who is recorded as died on 13th May, was probably the 26th. http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/12094-ats-casualties/ regards Clive
These casualties were as a result of the Hit and Run raids on the south coast of England from Yarmouth in the east to the Lizard in Cornwall by a special formed Luftwaffe unit which carried out raids from March 1942 to June 1943.These raids were usually carried out in the early morning,at lunch time or in the late evening. Events in another battlefield theatre put paid to these nuisance raids after a reassessment by the German High Command.
