    hi,
can anyone help with an incident around the Gt. Yarmouth area on 11/5/43, whilst looking up a marker in Caister churchyard, which had 2 dated 11/5/43, on the CWGC site it added 4 more, 4 were ATS, and 2 soldier's. So could it have been a traffic accident, bombing raid,?

    any help appreciated, regards,

    dave...

Thanks, that's another of the list. Incrediable where this is leading, from the graves registration report for this ATS girl, now I,m searching for 2 Luftwaffa airmen, and 2 navy sailor's, one of whom as Oberst as rank which is army or airforce yet he is listed as navy. so that is my next avenue to explore...

    regards,
    dave...

    thread here about it

26 ATS personnel died as a result of a bombing raid on Great Yarmouth,
Norfolk on 11th May 1943 when the hotel that they were billeted in recieved a direct hit, 25 are recorded as died on that day and one other, who is recorded as died on 13th May, was probably the 26th.

These casualties were as a result of the Hit and Run raids on the south coast of England from Yarmouth in the east to the Lizard in Cornwall by a special formed Luftwaffe unit which carried out raids from March 1942 to June 1943.These raids were usually carried out in the early morning,at lunch time or in the late evening.

Events in another battlefield theatre put paid to these nuisance raids after a reassessment by the German High Command.
