124532 War Substantive Captain, Acting Major Henry Ferdinand STANLEY, 1 Motor Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS
5 Guards Brigade, Guards Armoured Division, 30 Corps

On 20 September 1944 this Officer displayed outstanding gallantry in the capture of NIJMEGEN bridge.

When moving forward to the assaulting position the leading Platoon Commander was wounded. Major STANLEY went forward alone, and together with three volunteers crossed a street swept by fire to find a suitable route to continue the advance by. He then made three journeys backwards and forwards across the street to personally bring up his three Platoons and place then in position to assault the objective.

Under fire he contacted the Company Commander of an American Airborne Company on his right and co-ordinated a plan for he final assault on the strongpoint. Finally he personally led the leading Platoon into the assault, and moving from platoon to platoon directed operations despite very heavy fire, completely disregarding his own personal safety.

It is largely due to this Officer’s great courage, calmness and resourcefulness in very difficult and confused circumstances that the enemy strongpoint guarding the approaches to the bridge was taken.

    Immediate M.C., L.G. 01/03/1945

85592 Lieutenant (Temporary Captain) Lord Peter Alexander Rupert CARRINGTON, 2nd Armoured Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS
5 Guards Armoured Brigade, Guards Armoured Division, 30 Corps

On 20 September 1944, this Officer was ordered to guide a Troop of tanks down to NIJMEGEN Bridge and then to push them across with a view to capturing the bridge intact.

The Troop duly attacked, captured the bridge, and then pushed the main road on the far side for some distance to consolidate their gain. Hearing that the enemy had infiltrated between the Troop and the bridge, this Officer, on his own initiative, crossed the bridge in his tank and engaged the enemy, driving them off and remained holding the far side of the bridge until relieved by another tank. He then proceeded up the road and joined the Troop holding the Centre Line.

By his devotion to duty and initiative, this Officer was undoubtedly instrumental in control being retained of the NORTHERN approaches to the Bridge at a very vital time.

    Immediate M.C., L.G. 01/01/1945

There seems to be no (digitised) file for Guardsman Kosbab's MM, and upon checking a couple of other names under M.M. from the LG gazette published 9 July 1940, it appears that the whole list is missing.

    War Diary 2nd Bn GG:

    1940 May 14
    Louvain

F.D.L.s ? by the BELGIAN ARMY on the line of the Railway to positions on the WEST bank ? of the Canal. On completion of this move and after 12th LANCERS had withdrawn, all Bridges on the Battalion Sector were blown up, except the Belgian floating pontoon Bridge, which was retained, as orders had been received that a BELGIAN CAVALRY CORPS would withdraw by it. This Corps did not arrive and as the Bridge was in imminent danger of falling into German hands it was blown up. The Belgian CHASSEURS on the Belgian Sector had by this time withdrawn in some confusion and had shot Lieutenant J.E. SEYMOUR (No. 3 Company) in the back and arm when he tried to rally them and force them to return to their posts. The enemy continued to exert considerable pressure in LOUVAIN and in consequence one Section of the Carrier Platoon was put under order of O.C. No. 3 Company.

    1940 May 26
    Roubaix

Considerable air activity and enemy bombs were dropped in the forward company areas but no great damage done. Enemy infantry were occasionally seen moving in the area of HERSEAUX but no contact made.

    1030 hours
Guardsman KOSBAB received the Military Medal from G.O.C. 3rd DIVISION at H.Q. 1st Battalion COLDSTREAM GUARDS for the rescue of Lieutenant J.E. SEYMOUR at LOUVAIN.

This episode happened when the Grenadiers were forming their 6th Bn at Caterham.
It shows the rivalry between The Grenadiers and The Coldstream.

According to the Army Roll of Honour Frank Smith/Shorthouse MM was born and lived in Burton-On-Trent. Hope that might be of help in judging whether he is a relative or not.

Frank was born Frank Smith near Burton upon Trent but used the name Shorthouse when his mother re-married.
