    The following lists are transcriptions of notes in Missing Personnel file for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions Grenadier Guards.

    The contents of these files are basically working documents - lists which the clerks used to note any updates in the status of the missing - POW, DOW, KIA. All too often however no further information was forthcoming.

    In order to make more sense of the data, I have sorted the names into alphabetical order, but Post No. 24 shows the pages and the information in the order in which they are presented within the file.

    - Adjutant ? ?. J. 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards 1940 Note: BAILLEUL May 28th 1940, During the night, Capt. R.N. BRINCKMAN and Lt. R. COMPTON-ROBERTS comd. 2 and 1 Coys. respectively were both wounded and it is feared that they were taken prisoners. 2/Lt. L.P. AUBREY-FLETCHER, was missing, and 2/Lt. J.H. LANE-FOX was wounded & evacuated. During the day Lt. P.F. THORNE was wounded and evacuated, and the Adjutant was slightly wounded.
    - R.S.M. - - 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards 1940 Note: OKEGEM May 18th 1940, 5th Columnist sniping; the R.S.M. severely wounded in the back.

    - Captain ABEL-SMITH R. E. 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards 1940 Note: BAILLEUL May 21st 1940, At 0730 hours a violent arty. mortar and m.g. barraged fell on the whole of the 1st Gds. Bde. front; every movement drew accurate enemy fire. In these attacks m.g.s and mortars killed Major A.R. WEST and 2/Lt. A.N. BOYD, and Capt. P.J.C. RADFORD-NORSOP, Capt. P.T. CLIFTON, and Lt. The Master of FORBES were wounded. No. 3 Coy. was ordered to counter-attack at 11.30 hours, but the men were mown down by hidden M.G’s. The remainder of Nos. 3 and 4 Coys took up a line covering the main road. In this counter-attack Capt. R.E. ABEL-SMITH, Lt. H. REYNELL-PACK and Lt. The Duke of NORTHUMBERLAND were killed.

The following are the circumstances in which I last saw No. 2614140 Gds. WORRAL. One the afternoon of the day on which the 7th Gds Batt. [Bde?] withdrew from LOUVAIN (16.5.40) I was with a Section of my platoon in the 7th Gds. Bde. in the village of HEVENT. S shrapnel shell exploded above the Section position and all members were wounded including myself. I attended to the people who were wounded and was then evacuated myself before I could find out the true state of affairs as regards this man.
