If I have the service number for someone known to have served with the Green Howards, can the battalion to which it was allocated be determined?

(I don't have the number at present).

    Hi,

Unlike in WW1 it's not possible to identify a soldiers Battalion in a particular Regiment from his Army Service Number.

Army Service Numbers replaced Regimental Numbers in 1920. Regiments were allocated a block of numbers which were in use until 1942/43 when "General Service" Army Service Numbers were introduced.

The most insight you will get from an Army Service Number is that it identifies the Regiment of first enlistment as the Army Service Number was retained throughout a soldiers service - even if he transferred to

    No, GnrGnr!

You would need the person's service records to identify the battalion he/she served in.

Sometimes there are websites dedicated to, for example, certain Battalions, Regiments or Divisions, that contain this information. However, looking for an individual this way is 'hit and miss'!

Another way is to post a name and any other details you have. There is a slight possibility, that if his name is not too common, or by using a combination of name/regiment that it may be possible to get his battalion and service number in one hit. A long shot but you never know.

Thanks everyone. I thought that was the case but needed back up for my assertion!. The person with the original query is now going to apply for the man's records anyway!

Of course, if the person concerned was killed on service during WWII we should be able to find him with just his full name (if uncommon), or with added details like address, NOK, age, etc. (If a common name).

. Frank - when the record appears (and if I am informed!) I'll come back on this.

Steve Mac - the man survived the war and, as said, records are being applied for.

Thank you both for your interest.

I'm a bit late to this thread but I am in touch with Veteran Wilf Shaw of 6th Battalion Green Howards.
I am attaching this page with a link to Wilf's diaries-it is a list of the comrades Wilf knew or met during the war. Perhaps the person's name is on the list-if so he would have been in 6th Battalion:)- a long shot but you never know.

Just (18 March 2018) got an alert email to say that there was a new reply from Mr Bryan Byrne on this thread. Nothing here?
