Just wanted to share a bit of info on my Grandmother who was in the ATS in London during WW2. I know she did Nursing at some stage during her time serving but she also did many other things as well. A major moment of her service was when she was on leave, heading home to Essex from Liverpool Street train station. She was standing on the busy platform when one of Hitlers V1 rockets ( Doodlebugs ) cut out overhead and hit the station!

My Grandmother was blown onto the railway tracks unconscious, debris and devastation was everywhere. By some stroke of absolute angelic luck, a distant cousin was there and recognized her laying in the rubble, gathered her up and made sure she got medical attention. She survived the incident but was hospitalized and I always remember she still had very faint scars on her forehead from the bombing.

I have a photograph of her in her ATS uniform to this day hanging on my wall. I would love to try and get her records of service but not sure if they ever held records for women of the ATS or not?

    Cheers, Simon.

Thanks for the thought Mike but my project is for the unfortunate casualties who did not make it. Simon's Grandmother will fortunately, for her, will not appear.
