hi folks I've decided after watching ww2 in Colour to research my dads regiment etc and I thought I'd start here
Welcome indeed. If you haven't, the first thing you need are his service records: Get a copy of military service records: Overview - GOV.UK If you post what you have, name, dates etc, people here will get cracking for you.
Hi there thanks for the welcome .. He was in the 8th army in Africa and that's about all I know . Which is the best forum to get started?
Welcome! As Tony56 said, apply to the MOD for his service record which will give chapter and verse though it may take a while for it to arrive. I'd start a new thread in the Searching For Someone & Military Genealogy forum of this board, ideally using your dad's name, rank and unit, and any dates you might have as the thread title; if you don't have anything else, then just use his name and "8th Army". Good luck! Pat.
Hi and welcome to the Forum. Do you know if he was infantry, artillery etc etc or in an armoured Regiment? If the latter, you can get a copy of an amazing little document called a Tracer Card from the Bovington Tank Museum Library. It often contains quite a lot of information such as Regiments served and with dates etc etc and only costs £5. Best fiver I've ever spent on research. All you need is his name and preferably his Service Number.
