Welcome! As Tony56 said, apply to the MOD for his service record which will give chapter and verse though it may take a while for it to arrive. I'd start a new thread in the Searching For Someone & Military Genealogy forum of this board, ideally using your dad's name, rank and unit, and any dates you might have as the thread title; if you don't have anything else, then just use his name and "8th Army".

    Good luck! Pat.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Do you know if he was infantry, artillery etc etc or in an armoured Regiment? If the latter, you can get a copy of an amazing little document called a Tracer Card from the Bovington Tank Museum Library. It often contains quite a lot of information such as Regiments served and with dates etc etc and only costs £5. Best fiver I've ever spent on research. All you need is his name and preferably his Service Number.
