So, with a bit of luck I'll be able to get to El-Alamein in 2014, has anyone been lately?
I know about the museum and the cemeteries, what else is there to see/do?
Any advice on hotels etc would be welcome.
I'll post a thread for photo requests nearer my departure date.

Some useful info on this site ,

As regard to the political goings on in Egypt today , its a case of common sense , and weighing up the risks , I personally would visit , as a friend was working there right through the recent upheaval and didnt have any problems travelling at all. as long as you travel in a touristy area you should be alright as it will be well policed , they need the tourist dollar :)

Thanks groundhugger, as I thought, touristy areas should be safe enough.

Do you plan on visiting just Alamein or doing the entire North African conflict right up to the fall of Tunis?

No, just Alamein, would love to follow the entire campaign trail but just not possible for me.

Visited Alamein a couple of years back.
Day trip whilst on cruise so no chance to look around Battlefield.
Disappointed in Museum ,some interesting artefacts but I thought badly presented .like a sea side waxworks
    .Hope it may have improved.
The immaculate and profoundly moving War Cemetery made up for it ,
Groups of graves of troops killed in same incident or day of battle and their ages especially moving,
Also all buried as equals,a Brigadier along side Toms.

Terribly jeaulous of you RDR. As I've recently found out that my grandfather was supplying the 2nd Armoured Brigade at the start of Rommel's second offensive and the 50th Division at the outbreak of the Battle of Gazala, this part of the world is now on my battle sites tour wish list!
