As Goa was a Portugese colony, it was technically a neutral territory on the coast of India. Apart from "Boarding Party: The Last Action of the Calcutta Light Horse" (fictionalised as Sea Wolves with David Viven) I'm finding it difficult to find any histories of Goa's involvement during the war. I'm sure I've read mentions of Goa being used for espionage, shelters for U-boats and surface raiders etc, but google has frustrated me. Has anybody got any info they'd like to share?
I'm Portuguese, but I never heard anything at all about Goa in the period. How does the word "backwater" sound to you
Shiny 9th, Kyt has not been recorded as aboard since September 2007. You could try a PM, though is the email address used fourteen years ago still being in use could be a problem.
I have read a small amount about this. It seems not a huge amount went on. After Operation Creek/Boarding Party the German crew was interned and seems to have had good relations with the place. It seems the main war action was the secret radio on the German ships in harbour so I doubt much went on after this. But happy to be proven wrong.
I was only curious because a now deceased friend who had been in R.Navy had travelled out on an LCT, Mk2 from Falmouth to India and had, from memory mentioned Goa.
Marmagoa harbor, in southern Goa, was a neutral meeting point for exchange of interned civilians between British India and Japan in 1942 or 43.
