This is the title of the little button beside thread titles with new messages. Trouble is that when I press it I go to not the last post I'd seen before but an indeterminate number of posts before, sometimes even before posts by me own good self.

I swear I clean my cookies often enough, I don't know what this is and this is the only forum where this happens. I've been suffering this little WW2T since time immemorial.

    Help?

It's Adam's way of making you revise for your exams......

Cleaning cookies would mess it up I'd imagine, them storing things like time last visited etc.
It's either browser settings, or vbulletin being it's usual clunky self... I'd lean towards a slightly high browser security level but will have a dig to see if there's more precise info out there.

At my age the only exams I need are colonoscopies and their ilk :p

Thanks Adam, I'll be waiting. Strange thing is this is the only place where that happens.

I get the same problem - although only on some threads. Clearing cookies or cache doesn't seem to fix it and my only observation would be that it seems to affect longer threads. Currently I'm noticing it on the Horsemeat one, which jumps to post 58 (of 102!) Happens all the time in the jokes thread.

Using Firefox 19beta on W7 Home Premium.

I suppose you have been doing something about my problem, as the go-to-first-unread-post is working, but in some threads only, I can't understand why.

Oh arse, I was looking at the 'Last Post' button. I never use the last unread thing so confusion reigned.

All very strange, as the icon wasn't even showing for me or the Test Profile on Firefox, but was on IE & Chrome.
Cleared my FF cache and it appeared, but still didn't seem to be working as it should all the time.

Seems likely this is either down to the forum not quite updating all it's thread info 100% all the time, or our somewhat dated Vbulletin slipping behind newer browsers.
First seems most likely - will have a proper look at the deeper settings, though often they've been set to a certain state for a good reason (often one I've forgotten...), so I'll be treading a little carefully.

    OK, may have got it.
(May also just be tweaking what shows as read rather than how the button works... but there you go.)

This overall 'read marking' data was being stored in cookies on a session by session basis. (Apparently a somewhat hit & miss method)
Set it to work from the database itself at what's supposed to be the most solid setting.
Give it a day or two 'server side' to settle in and see if that sorts it.
(Should also improve things across multiple access devices if you visit by phone/tablet/desktop etc., as it's not relying on each machine's cookies.)

One caveat; that this is described as a more processor/space intensive method at this end, so I'll be watching for any hits on performance, and possibly expecting a contact from Otto if I've pushed it too far. Don't think it'll be a problem though.

Also, no matter what the setting - the data is supposed to be wiped after ten days away, when all will show as unread. Will look into effects of increasing that.

Edit: - And changing the setting seems to have reset every single thread to unread for me.
Quick Links>Mark Forums Read resets everything to scratch if that causes any confusion.
I would perhaps advise doing that regardless if you want to test if the system has improved.

Hmm, does seem to have improved things for me.
Apologies for that slew of posts from my Test Profile, all tidied away now.

I'm seeing the same. Although I noticed that on a second visit of the day (I always enter via the Portal) the "new posts" counter had reset, but only the threads I had looked at on the first visit of the day were showing as read: I've noticed that normally changes after being logged on for about 30 minutes or after logging off and returning.

I've just marked all forums read, so will keep an eye on it and report back!

Normal service appears to have been resumed.

If the "go to first unread" is still misbehaving, I'll post again.

I noticed yesterday when logging on that I had several hundred new posts showing, which was not correct, as I had viewed many.

I have just logged on again and have 20 pages of new posts since viewing last night, which again is not correct.

Do I need to do something at my end?

    Regards
    Tom

Hi, Tom. Go to 'Quick Links' on the top right-ish of the page, and click 'Mark Forums Read'.

That'll reset everything so may make it a bit trickier to keep up for a while, but it's looking like the 'Last unread post' button is now working far more efficiently, so it'll all shake out over a fairly short period for each chap.

Useful button... I should use that .
(Definitely now working across PC/Phone/Tablet etc. for me. Nice.)

Logging on today the above just happened to me. Some threads I know I had read yesterday, and sometimes it took me right back to the beginning of a thread started years ago, all showing up as unread:lol:. Hope you understand all that.

Adam-just marked them all as read and it has re-set itself.
(Only problem I have now is that everything is marked as read -oh well hope I haven't missed anything important since last night);)

Adam, I hate to pee on your cigar but I came to this thread and my "last unread post" apparently was my first one, which is where I was directed to :)

    Sorry!

OK so what does the "Go to first new post" icon look like?I can only see the ''Go to last post'' icon.
    It's all I've ever seen.

    Grey box with blue arrow.

Since this thread has lead to some changes things arent working properly.
    I posted on a thread.
It didnt show up on ''New Posts'' but did when I clicked ''Today's posts''

Something has changed & I dont like it.
    I blame Za.
    ;)

it's the downward arrow to the left of thread title list

I've never ever used that function ever.

    Wait & see.
I think it's a mildly hit & miss function even when it's working. Seems likely it might even give different results depending on how far down the screen one scrolled while reading a thread. The machine not knowing where your eyes were accurately (yet...).
I've always had my view set to 40/50 posts a page, so I just scroll back from last post and usually find where I'd read - this view last unread thing'll likely work better on longer threads than 10-20 posts.
