Hi, I am trying to find some information on my grandfather and I was wondering if anyone could help? Our family know very little about his time in the Army so any information would be helpful. I am hoping to find information on which unit he was in, where they were when he was captured, etc.

    Name: William Anthony
Date of Birth: 14th November 1918
    Soldier No.: 1515038
    Rank: Gunner
    Regiment: Royal Artillery
    POW No.: 11538
    POW Camp: Stalag XXB Marienburg

I have contacted a few places to obtain his service records, but I dont think we are likely to hear from them soon.

    Thanks
    Regards
    Greg

I've moved your post from the Stalag XX thread so the members can give it more attention.

The only plcae to get his service records is from the MoD , costs 30 quid & wait is about a year.

    Greg,

POW records are held by the International Committee of the Red Cross and can be obtained from them. Details here: ICRC Archives

Also the National Archives might have a liberation questionnaire for him. About 60% of returning POWs completed this questionnaire that should give you some basic biographical details and a list of camps he was in. It might contain additional information about any war crimes or escape attempts he may of had knowledge of.

As Owen mentions, for his service record then an application needs to be made to the Ministry of Defence. But once you have it you can follow war diaries and regimantal histories to discover what he may have been doing up to the time of his capture.

Thanks for your help everyone! I will contact the ICRC and the M.O.D. and see what they can dig up for me. If I get any information I'll post it on here.

    Thanks again!

Hi Greg and welcome to the forum. It may be worth asking Lee above to check the Questionnaires at Kew for you incase he filled out a report. :)
