The destroyers Codrington, Jaguar and Javelin, diverted from patrol, arrived off Dunkirk at 13.55 hrs. They had picked up 33 survivors that morning from the SS Abukir, which had been torpedoed by an E-boat while returning with about 200 evacuees from Ostend to the United Kingdom; these survivors were transferred to the destroyer Grenade which subsequently went on to Dunkirk.

I suspect Cpl Murton was possibly one of the survivors but died of wounds after being landed.

Andy, Thanks for the information on SS Abukir. Codrington was the destroyer that rescued my father off the beaches between La Panne and Bray Dunes on 1 June 1940.
