hi all and Jan7 , sorry not got back intouch am v busy at work i tried to post some pics from cannock but failed lol will try again did get some with names on .i have always been interested in the german side of ww2 and was pleased to see that the war graves are looked after all over the world of these brave soldiers .We unlike many obviously see that these men were only doing their job aswell and there should be no hatred of them no matter what happened ,unfortunatly war is war and all think that their side is correct (although i know that towards the end many didn't) but these men and women should have the same respect as others do and i for one give that to them take care all and will try get the pics online for all to see take care ,Rommel_uk.

    Hi Rommel

My father was at Cassino, came up from Egypt with the 8th Army. He was taken prisoner on the Gothic Line, and a POW he remained til the end of the war.

The war in North Africa was a 'gentlemans war' where they played by the rules and against a third enemy - the desert.

My father had no hatred for the german soldier, only against the Nazi's - and like you have stated, the soldier is simply obeying orders, as all soldiers must.

In war, both sides experience great loss.

I have been going through my Dad's immediate post-war photographs at which time he was billeted in Germany and they have thrown up a reference to a Luftwaffe bomber crew member who was lost in a raid on Southampton. I've searched the Volksbund site for Rammler and Ramler but not found anything that fits.

I'm assuming a date of death of 1940 or 1941 and that if there is a known grave it is in Cannock or Southampton. Can anyone point me in the direction of a German equivalent of Geoff's Search Engine or a list of German casualties buried in the UK or even Luftwaffe losses for the period in the hope that I can find a near match ?

I am not completely sure about the spelling and my knowledge of German surnames is not good enough to guess alternatives.

    Thanks,

    Rich.

    Rich,
I once couldn't find a record on German site, but Dave came back and said something to effect that -

as the German soldier man was buried in a cwgc cemetery in France, he would fall under their records, which are not online, and that the German site did not have all records up yet.

    Maybe he can confirm?

But, possibly cwgc would be first point of call, if your man is in a cemetery under care of cwgc.

    That seems a real shame.
Does the same apply to Commonwealth casualties in Volksbund cemeteries? That is of course if there are any in that category?

Thanks for your comments dbf and vp. The volksbund site seems to include those 'missing' but the only ones I saw were Eastern front where this is often the case. Certainly the CWGC entry for Cannock Chase includes no detailed information, although the cemetery is under their care.

Diane, I've just read your latest post with Dave's explanation. On the assumption that pretty well every UK grave is under CWGC control, then there is probably no on-line source for Luftwaffe casualties lost over the British Isles ?

    I'll keep Googling !

There actually are some - they're listed under the CWGC

    Rich & VP,

The fact that the data seems incomplete gives me hope that one day I might find the record of my grandfather's mate. He is nowhere to be found on the system and lately I have been wondering/hoping if perhaps his remains are amongst those stored until recently in that Czech toilet factory.

What was left of the Div. surrendered to the Russians in then Czechoslovakia. As he was Polish and serving as an interpreter for the Germans, I have very little hope for him having survived. I believe if they have any identities for the remains, this would be the last chance of finding out what happened to him.

The "missing" listed are...but they're not(!) The work being done by the VdK on the Eastern front includes the relocation of many "lost" graves, the interns of these being listed (in many cases) on screen walls , etc. These who are listed are mentioned on the VdK site whereas those who are completely disappeared aren't.

    Rich,

Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery has 4,858 burials (according to the CWGC website). I have details of most, probably all, of these and cannot find RAMLER, RAMMLER and anything like it. Possibly an unknown burial if there are any, or could be buried elsewhere - I'll check what else I have. Any more details available to help pin it down?

I think the burials at the other cemetery here, Cannock Chase War Cemetery (286 German) may be WW1.

The smaller Cannock CWGC cemetery on the way in to the German one does indeed contain a substantial block of WW1 German burials (And a Pole). Posted some pictures here:
    http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-cemeteries-war-memorial-research/9959-cannock-chase-german-cemetery.html#post90659
I seem to recall there was a hospital on the site during WW1?

I find Cannock one of Britain's most unusual places to visit, it's just so... strange.
Never fails to intrigue even completely non military interested people we've taken down there

Nothing in Southampton, Hollybrook - mostly German army anyhow, but there are two unidentified German burials there. Could be others elsewhere.

The name RAMMLER and RAHMELOW exists, but only one example of each (WW1 army)

The majority are WW1, but some are WW2... (another place I happened to visit in passing last week!!!)...
