This photo is of a farm feed trough in the middle of the countryside near to our village in the North East UK. Obviously a POW working the land and he has repaired the trough and left his Mark. ' POW Fritz Anscheit 1946'. It is becoming a bit of a memorial with plants being planted in it and when people are walking past they are droppng pebbles into the centre bit. I wonder if he stayed or went back to Germany. Anyone have the ability to search his name for any info?
Takes some skill to carve your name in reverse in raised relief on a large piece of wood to include in the shuttering. Then you have to do the mix to cast on site.
I have walked past this many times over the years. There was another smaller trough in the vicinity, also with a POW named on the end panel. The land army girls also worked around the same area. They derelict homes can still be seen. just at the side of the A66.The girls worked in the apple orchards which were situated at the bottom of Hill House lane, Sadberge. The girls were kept strictly apart from POW's. My mothers sister always spoke with fondness of her days in the Land Army. Veronica.
To find out where Fritz went after 1946, you have to send an inquiry to the Berlin archives, which costs money. I tried a German WW2 forum -nothing. Stefan.
I have read that Lindele very interesting, I wonder if Fritz was an inmate at Windlestone Hall, Rushyford. This is another good read- Were female Nazis kept within these walls?
