Technically wagons and not carts. Don't appear British wagons - perhaps French or Belgian?

The odd thing is that the BEF is supposed to have been 100% mechanised! The other odd thing is that if the guy is a POW why he was allowed to mount a horse on which he could make an escape.

Wagons normally are four wheeled - carts two. There are other distinctions but let's not get too technical. The first photo was of four wheeled wagons and the other two of two wheeled carts. Wagons usually used for medium to heavy loads - carts for light.

Love that the wagons are drawn up by the petrol pumps.
Though it looks like water most likely being dispensed from the same device.

Intrigued by one pump's propeller logo. First instinct says BMW, but that seems unlikely on a petrol pump, especially outside a Renault garage.

Renault did act as agents for some BMW models before the war. Then Renault was very much in the driving seat in the relationship in France, after 1940 the jackboot was very much on the other foot.
Looking at the contents of those carts they seem to be refugee rather than military. By June 1940 it was estimated that there were between 6 - 8 million French refugees on the roads*. It was one of the reasons (excuses) used by Petain in justifying seeking an armistice
I think those are farm carts rather than military wagons.

Yes they are refugees by there carts. Behind the last cart there is a pram that is towed by the cart, you can see the rope/string.
