I am looking for any books etc, that are available, describing the Italian campaign from the German side.
Have just recieved 'Battleground Italy' by Franz Kurowski, and know of 'Neither Fear nor Hope' by Etterlen, but not sure if he just concentrates on the battles for Cassino.
I do believe that this theatre is poorly covered in regard to the axis viewpoint.
    Regards

    James.

Von Senger's 'Neither Fear nor Hope' is quite good but he comes across as quite arrogant. His views are all very well but they were written after the event. Monte Cassino by Rudolf Bohmler is a very good German account. The Memoirs by Albert Kesselring is good. Try Das War Monte Cassino by Horst Lutter.

Kesselring's Chief of Staff Gen Westphal wrote The German Army in the West.

    Hi James,
    I suggest you

    Montecassino - of Rudolf Bohmler

    and

"Neither fear nor hope" the wartime career of general Frido von Senger und Etterlin, defender of Cassino.
translated from the German by George Malcolm. London: Macdonald.

The two books really important for know the battles of Cassino from the german side, both give a lot of informations, and in the first one you should find also some map and picture.

    Best wishes. G.

I have "The straits of Messina" by Johannes Seinhoff. covers 8 days in fight for sicily. he was a Me109 fighter commander. He provides an interesting account of the Italian air force at that time. Its out of print (circa 1971), however if you are interested, its free to a good home.

Do want books in German? Joseph Klein Fallshirmjaeger is a personal account of a FJ-Pionier in Italy.
