FOOTNOTE TO TABLE 4

1. Sd. Kfz Numbers
The Sd. Kfz. (Sonderkraftfahrzeug or special vehicle) number was given by the German Army to the members of each series introduced into service, for identification purposes. Thus, Sd. Kfz. 10 indicated a 1-ton semi-tracked tractor, without reference to which manufacturers' model it might be. An oblique stroke followed by a further numeral indicated that the vehicle carried some special equipment or was otherwise modified.

2. Basic Chassis Designations
These consisted of the abbreviation of tractor (Zugkraftwagen) followed by the trailed load rating, and simply indicated the type of vehicle, without reference to the particular manufacturers' model. Thus, Zgkw 8t. might mean any tractor in the 8-ton series.

3. Manufacturers' Model Designations
In the manufacturers' model designations e.g. KMn 11, D 7 p, H 8 (H) initial capitals were the initials of the parent firm or one of the principal manufacturers. Thus,
A = Adler
BN = Büssing N.A.G.
D = Demag
F = Famo
H = Hanomag
HL = Borgward (Hansa-Lloyd)
KM = Krauss Maffei.

The subsequent small letter or letters, used only in the earlier models, referred to the series to which the vehicle belonged, thus
11 = the lightest type at the relevant date, i.e. 1-ton series
kl = the small type, i.e. the 3-ton series
1, m and s referred respectively to the light (5-ton), medium (8-ton) and heavy (12-ton) series.

The figure gave the number of the model in the development series of each type.

A terminal p indicated that the vehicle was armoured (gepanzert), while a terminal H in brackets indicated that it had a rear engine (Heckmotor).

In the HK range, e.g. HK 101, HKp 606, HK = semi-track (Halbkettenfahrzeug), p indicated an armoured model and the "hundreds" part of the figure gave the approximate weight of the vehicle in tons, while the digits figure gave the serial number of the model.

Some of those light Tractors are entirely new to me as well - I can see I've been putting off getting Spielberger's halftrack book for too long now.
