Just googled `German Ammo Box` and up popped plenty of photographs similar to your own all titled the same?

    `German WW2 MG34/42 ammo box`

Only just seen this post and can also corroborate that the ammo box is definitely a WW2 German version usually carrying MG 34/42 metal linked rounds.

The box is not WW2 manufacture but rather a post war version used by the Bundeswehr for carrying the ammunition for an MG3 machine gun.

Wartime boxes didn't have the two ribs running down the side nor lettering and numbers pressed in to the metal of the lid.
