Can anyone help identify the regiment and anything else about George Barry (Glasgow) from his uniform? Many thanks!
If you know his date of birth and can find a copy of his death certificate then apply for his services records, they should tell you which regiment(s) he was in - link Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK it will save an awful lot of guesswork TD
George Barry born in Partick, Glasgow in 1918 Died: 1994 Glasgow, Martha St. RD Age 75 ? He also has an arms of service strip underneath his divisional insignia. It appears to be two colours which implies he wasn't in an Infantry Regiment? Arm of Service Strips He also appears to be wearing a coloured field service cap, compare the colour of his cap to the khaki of his battledress.
Dear all, I'm much indebted for your insights, and have passed them on to George's daughter, who is going to request the service record etc, as suggested. He did survive the war. He trained as a draughtsman, I believe (though unsure if before or after the war), which might indicate enlistment in a specialist service? Guy, spot on with identifying him!
As an aside, his brother James (1901-2002) had a chemistry degree and was conscripted (or enlisted) to the Home Guard as a gas officer. He used to sit in the hills overlooking Clydebank, watching for chemical attacks in the blitz.
If he was in 5 Inf Div and survived then he had quite a war so his Service Record should be interesting. They were in Madgascar amongst others and were known as the Globetrotters. They pop in that part of the war that I am interested in: on the Garigliano in Jan 44 and at Anzio from Mar-Jun 44. Regards Frank
