Not all CWGC records have an age given. I thought some of you may be interested in the age distribution of those that are given. This list is for UK unit casualties between 1939-45 (not including civilian war dead). Many of the youger deaths will be cadets or boy rank and many will be navy or mercantile marine. The older numbers will be staff officers, etc. and perhaps home defence units.

(if I find a way to tabulate this i'll edit it!)

The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards

    Owen,

They are listed under RAC, so the unit is not in the drop down. You will have to search in the Unit Text field. I tried it on my 'desktop' version and got over 100, here is one below to show the record format.

    cheers,

Excellent stats. I've cobbled a tabulation:

Nice one Steve, found myself oddly hypnotised by those figures when I first noticed them the other day.

I assume the extreme ends of the spectrum are mostly civillian dead, but it must be possible some of those 14-16 year olds lied about their age (or perhaps are from 'colonial' armies ??).
Couldn't work out if I can search through Geoff's engine using age as a criteria to see who might have a regimental/unit identity associated with such youth though. (?)

No these are all military. Civilian age spreads mirrors the general population (age 0-90 years, bombs have no preference.). A lot of the young ones may be naval, or mercantile marine. Older end would include staff officers, who don't retire.

No you cannot do this (yet!). There is no age search field. If you're curious about some ages I could look them up.

    Thank you.

    Fascinating but grim reading.
Deck/Cabin Boys and Buglers. and an ATC cadet.
Stupid of me to forget the Wavy Navy, maybe some kind of dim assumption/hope going on in my head that the boys would be somehow safer than the rest of the crew...

    Of course, they weren't. :poppy:

So who's the 91 year old?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

    Cheers,
Seems an odd inclusion on CWGC, or are Field Marshalls (or even Dukes etc. with military service) included as a matter of course?

And others, above a certain rank, if died of any cause during the commemoration period, but I believe the rule only came into force in 1940something. So dying between whatever that date is and 31.12.1947 qualifies.

UK Civilian war deaths 1939-1947. This does not include quite a number who's age is given in months, rather than years (usually under 3 years old) - I'm still trying to count those.
