At the risk of repeating myself, I cannot stress too much how valuable Geoff's site is. Just in case you have yet to pay a visit to the site , here is the link: http://www.********.co.uk/cgi-bin/search39-47.php For the first time I have been able to get a definitive list of ALL the men who fell in both of the two regiments in which I served simply by keying in (to UNIT TEXT) the name of the regiment. In my case: 4th Queen's Own Hussars 49 lt aa (49th Light Ack Ack Rgt. RA) This is how the search results will appear (49th LAA) Page 1 of 5 001 ADAMSON, C 2925697 16/12/1942 002 ARKWRIGHT, W 1821172 27/11/1942 003 BACON, WA 1734151 20/04/1941 004 BAINES, JR 1681710 03/12/1942 005 BASS, K 6401408 21/10/1943 006 BEATTIE, GW 1678859 10/09/1941 007 BOURNE, TG 11426035 06/12/1942 008 BUCKLEY, GE 1681743 02/07/1941 009 BURNARD, RG 14316033 14/04/1944 010 BUTTLER, EG 1679324 26/10/1946 011 CARTER, N 1636584 05/12/1942 012 CATTLE, FA 1831067 30/05/1944 013 CHARMAN, ET 1681752 16/12/1942 014 CHISNALL, FLE 2041114 03/11/1943 015 CODRAI, JA 2082018 08/01/1943 016 COMPTON, EC 1681760 09/08/1943 017 COVERDALE, J 1765451 24/11/1942 018 COWLEY, FH 1605889 03/10/1943 019 CRAGG, WD 1691410 01/12/1942 - 03/12/1942 020 CREASEY, W 1602087 11/02/1943 Well done Geoff !
Marcus He most certainly is ! See below: This is a new forum section specifically dedicated to Geoff501 and his impressive search engine. The WW2 Commonwealth Casualty Search Engine We reckon it's a significant contribution to the field and well worth supporting in every way we can. To that end we've offered Geoff this space to do what he likes with regarding his work, be it updates, announcements or any other 'notes & queries'. To all intents this is very much 'his' forum & we'll be sorting out full edit powers for him within this area shortly. We're pleased that he's happy to make use of us and hope it proves a useful resource for the forum & it's members while simultaneously assisting with a serious WW2 related project or two. Well worth checking out his main cryptography site as well: The Crypto Barn In short; Welcome to WW2Talk Geoff, may the relationship prove beneficial to all. Cheers, Adam & the Mod/Admin gang.
Use it a few times and you'll find yourself largely discarding the main CWGC site, I could never have found some men killed while boarding French ships in British harbours during Operation catapult without it. A date and the names of their ships were enough.
Its a fantastic resource and one that is a serious tool for anyone with an interest in the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces in WW2.
Find myself using his website all the time, as it enables you to find all sorts of useful stuff. One of the best sites that has come online in years, IMHO.
Have found it especially useful in helping enquirers, about a particular relative, find all members who fell in that relative's unit. Steve W.
Geoff, You answered my 3 Bn IG prayers with this. Sorry I didn't see it sooner myself. Wie dumm von mir! [To paraphrase Rommel] Diane
Geoff, You answered my 3 Bn IG prayers with this. Sorry I didn't see it sooner myself. Wie dumm von mir! [To paraphrase Rommel] Diane You have Owen D to blame for this. We had just done some cemetery searches (which is not yet possible on line) and he showed me the thread you have started and I thought I'd do the 3rd the same. More useful format the the engine's usual output. I used 3rd Bn as the filter, anywhere in the record, and it does not seem to have found any that are recorded as Attd. 3rd Bn.. - On the search engine you can't search on a secondary (attached) unit text, only the first unit text. geoff
Hi Geoff, Nope, tried to follow that, but too techie for me I'm afraid ... my husband gave up long ago trying to explain the intricacies of his databases!! [Oracle programmer/analyst] However, I am pleased no end that you did this for me. I told my father only yesterday that I would not be able to get him a comprehensive list of the 3 Bn, no matter how hard I tried. He wants it to go through the names and see what he can remember of his mates. You have made it possible. There can be no higher praise than that, I think. Cheers again, Diane
Awesome! This is great. Thanks for pointing this out, Ron. I had never seen this site before but will be a GREAT help in my research. Thanks Geoff501!
