    Hi Steen,

What is the number of Generals by country? I have not seen that on your site. I could count them but I am a bit lazy.

This is an amazing work, how long have you been collecting this information?

Tell us all a bit about yourself, what influenced you!

    Regards

Numbers of generals broken by country is as below. However a few comments are necessary. The number of British and Commonwealths generals includes brigadiers which might if correct be considered generals but I decided to include them because they often held positions equivalent the position of a brigadier-general in other nations. It is also clear that the number of German general is low compared to those of other countries. I still have to add about 2500 German generals however I must admit that I have neglected them because they seem to attract so much attention everywhere and it is rather easy to find info on them. Nevertheless some day I will get around to adding as I do have information on all of them. I should also mention that both the Chinese and Japanese numbers covers the time span of 1932-1945.

    Australian 198
    Belgium 79
    Brazil 17
    Bulgaria 116
    Canada 164
    China 1013
    Croatia 92
    Czechoslovakia 186
    Denmark 16
    Estonia 16
    Finland 63
    France 985
    Germany 257
    Great Britain 2606
    Greece 60
    Hungary 368
    Italy 1060
    Japan 1082
    Latvia 33
    Lithuania 36
    New Zealand 61
    Norway 11
    Poland 196
    Romania 292
    South Africa 35
    Soviet Union 4849
    Netherlands 44
    USA 1369
    Yugoslavia 177

I started compiling information about the generals about 15 years ago when I finished high school. I have always been interested in history and in the Second World War and when reading a book about the war I got frustrated about the lack of information on the generals' careers and I was at the time unable to find a useful reference book on the subject so I started compiling the information myself. Remember this was before the Internet truly became world wide – I think I got access in 1995 – so at the time it was rather difficult to get information on the obscure generals, which at the time meant all non-German generals except the few well known Allied generals. After I got access to the Internet it became much easier especially when you got an education as mine in information and library science as you get to know off and how to use numerous sources. At one point in this process of course my work shifted from being a tool when reading books about WW2 to where the generals became my primary focus. Then finally in 2000 I decided to make the information accessible to others.

Oh – btw. I have made the list above using the search function. You just choose the nation and the hit counter will give you the number of generals from that nation.

    Kind Regards

Leonid Ilich Brezhnev was the instigator of détente while at the same time, he saw to it that the Soviet Union's military-industrial complex was greatly expanded and modernized. Under his leadership, the Soviets achieved parity with the United States in strategic nuclear weapons, and their space program overtook the American one. A huge navy was fitted out and the army remained the largest in the world.

This sent the USSR into financial decay and made life very difficult for their population through shortages and declines in standards of living.
