Born on this day 26th November were:

British Brigadier John Buchanan Adams in 1906
Soviet Lieutenant-General Dmitrii Andreevich Kupriianov in 1901
Soviet Major-General of Technical-Engineering Service Genrikh Aleksandrovich Leikin in 1888
Soviet Major-General of Tank Troops Georgii Stepanovich Sidorovich in 1903
Soviet Colonel-General Filipp Feodosevich Zhmachenko in 1895
US Major-General Maurice Rose in 1899
    Yugoslav Brigadier-General Blažo M. Đukanović in 1883

Today we got one of the few US generals that became kia during the war.

Born on this day 27th November were:

Bulgarian General of Artillery Rusi Hristov Rusev in 1887
Japanese Lieutenant-General Masaharu Honma in 1887
Japanese General Jinsaburo Mazaki in 1876
Soviet Major-General Nikolai Ivanovich Dubinin in 1899
Soviet Colonel-General Nikolai Ivanovich Gusev in 1897
US Major-General Ralph Corbett Smith in 1893
US Lieutenant-General Richard Kerens Sutherland in 1893

Quite an interesting catch today with Honma and MacArthur's CoS, funny that those two were born on the same day. Otherwise it seems to be a VIP day with Rusev, Mazaki and Gusev.

Thank you for your input Steen.

It is interesting to note those generals who may not have the high profiles as well as those who do.

An intriguing name is Soviet Major-General David Iosifovich Ortenberg

David & Ortenberg seem to me to be Hebrew (beloved) and German (town) respectively.

Do you have any further details on him?

    Thanks Gnomey.

I had seen his run down of positions however the name intrigued me and I was looking for a bit of personal family history if it was available.

    Geoff,

I am current in the process of adding new in formation on the Soviet generals but I haven't reach Ortenberg yet. However I can't provide much further information on the fellow's family history beside the obvious that his father's name was Iosif.

You can find Ortenberg's wartime memoirs online at
    http://militera.lib.ru/memo/russian/ortenberg_di1/
    http://militera.lib.ru/memo/russian/ortenberg_di2/
    http://militera.lib.ru/memo/russian/ortenberg_di3/

Which of course is in Russian but with the help of several online translators and a good online dictionary, you will get some inside of the person.

Beside this I have discovered that he died in 2002, and here you can read an article on perhaps his last visit to the 'Red Star' in 2000 http://www.redstar.ru/2001/08/11_08/4_02.html there is also a photo of him.

Soviet Colonel-General Vassili Nikolaevich Gordov in 1896
Soviet Kombrig Nikolai Fedorovich Guskov in 1892
Soviet Major-General Nikolai Kuzmich Kirillov in 1895
Soviet Colonel-General of Tank Troops Andrei Grigorevich Kravchenko in 1899
US Major-General Elwyn Donald Post in 1899
US Major-General Josef Robert Sheetz in 1895
    Yugoslav Brigadier-General Panta M. Drackić in 1881

Amazingly THREE!! Who suffered in the hands of Stalin's regime and two of them with their lives.

Firstly I have a correction about the above mentioned Soviet Major-General Dmitrii Nikolaevich Nadeshnyi in 1873. His name should be transliterated Nadezhnyi and he was born on 25th October 1873 and not 25th November. Beside this his final rank was Lieutenant-General and he didn't retire until the winter 1941/1942. More on him in the next update of my database. I will make a notification.

Born on this day 2nd December were:

Soviet Marshal of Soviet Union Ivan Khristoforovich Bagramian in 1897
Soviet Marshal of Soviet Union Georgii Konstantinovich Zhukov in 1896
US Brigadier-General Theron DeWitt Weaver in 1892
    Yugoslav Brigadier-General Đorđe S. Glišić in 1887

    So two Soviet marshals today.
