Ha ha, very good, Peter. Are there any plants named after aircraft? A Lancaster Rose perhaps? BBC - Gardening - Plants - Plant Finder - Aubrieta 'Elsa Lancaster'
Owen, Dave, The Gardening list I posted above is the official list taken from the document AIR41/47 and covers the period July 1941 to February 1943. Dave, if you would like copies of maps of the area covered I can post them here. The term Gardening comes up in Bletchley Park's work. When short of Enigma cribs they would arrange for mines to be dropped in German swept waters. Soon a coded Enigma message would result, giving the mine grid location. A lever was thereby found into breaking the code.
Gage - wrong Lancaster ! Elsa Lancaster was the actress wife of Charles Laughton - she didn't fly too well but she was not quite as dumpy as he was. She was a tremenously good character actress and made many films, mostly in Hollywood. - nice try though Cheers
Owen go to the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk and look at RHS plantfinder. This is an online plant finder system and lists the nurseries that stock it and if they do mail order. Good luck - Robert

Result, after a few minutes instense Googling finally found a supplier of Clematis that stocks Monte Cassino. Not far away in Brinkworth. Will be paying a visit very soon, assuming they're in stock. clematis nursery - walled garden nursery CLEMATIS MONTE CASSINO
I bought myself two Clematis Monte Cassino today & then saw one called Burma Star. Will have to go back for that one. Nice idea Brian, how many ships were in that Class ?
Well the Polish Spirit has flowered. As I say inspired to buy it after the trip to Cassino. Having looked more at Polish history of WW2 it means a bit more to me. when i look at it.

It deserves it's RHS Award of Merit status It has. BBC - Gardening: Plant Finder - Viticella Group clematis Holder of the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in recognition of its outstanding excellence, 'Polish Spirit' was raised by Brother Stefan Franczak in Poland
Is it Organic? Yeah, I just stick things in the ground & let them get on with it. Do use the dirty washing up water to keep them going. I'm quite pleased with the ones around the water feature in the back garden, the 'Polish Spirit' is going mad one side & the other 'Monte Cassino' doing well the other. That's gonna look great next year when they are both established. Quite apt too, I wonder if there is a Clematis called '4th Indian Division' ?
