    Hi Diane,

Thanks for all your recent Brigade of Guards postings.

I have the squad photo of my relative Gdsn 2695279 Patrick Francis Devlin - Cpl G Brown's Squad Feb 1936 - which also has a Gdsn J Wilson - who due to the proximity of their service numbers is likely the latter CSM Wilson as his service number is 2695266. My relative enlisted 18th September 1935.

    Regards

    Steve

    Thanks Steve,
could you upload the photo please, even if just part?
It'd be great to put another face to a name.

    Hi Diane,

Profuse apologies I don't know how but I've mixed up the surnames. It is J Wilson in the squad photo not J Hughes as in your gallantry award post so clearly not the same person.

It's not a very good quality photo - it's a copy of the original taken in the 1970's after my relative passed away - and my technical knowledge is limited so I'll email it to you and you can decide if it is worth posting. Won't be able to do it before the weekend though.

    Regards

    Steve

21141 War Substantive Major Patrick STEUART-FOTHRINGHAM, 2nd Battalion SCOTS GUARDS
32nd Guards Brigade, Guards Armoured Division, 30 Corps

Major P. STEUART-FORTHRINGHAM as Second-in-Command of 2nd Bn SCOTS GUARDS and previously as a Company Commander has rendered outstanding and exceptionally devoted service during the past campaign.

As a Coy Comd Major FOTHRINGHAM led the only SCOTS GUARDS coy [X Company] in the theatre which served first as one of the cosy of the 3rd Battalion IRISH GUARDS and subsequently of 1st Battalion WELSH GUARDS.

Major FOTHRINGHAM's inspiring leadership produced a Coy which won the admiration of both units to which it was attached. In many severe actions from NORMANDY to GERMANY Major FOTHRINGHAM showed a coolness, complete disregard of danger and a tactical ability which time and again saved his Coy casualties and brought to a successful end the tasks he was given to carry out.

As Second-in-Command his previous fighting experience was of the greatest assistance to his Commanding Officer when 2nd Battalion SCOTS GUARDS arrived in the theatre in March.

His presence and example did much to overcome the initial strangeness which a unit, for the most part without battle experience, feels going into action for the first time in a new theatre. He undoubtedly had much to do with the fine performance which 2nd Battalion SCOTS GUARDS put up during the final phases of the campaign.
