On the mod records held pre 1901 site I have found G W Thornton Lane 608559 RA I believe he served ww1 and 2 but can not find any ww1 records or medals Also I cannot find him in the RA attestation records on fmp Can anyone help?
are the initials R W or G W just put his number here although from the 1920s onwards till end WW2 Army Number to check: The army number: 608559 indicates that the soldier's original unit or date joined was: "Hussars" http://www.corpsofmilitarypolice.org/tools/armynumber?query=608559+
Sorry G W Thanks for that, so would the hussars be ww1? I have been told that he may have just been G W Thornton in ww1
Hi, The MOD database for soldiers born pre 1901 who served on post completion of WW1 demobilisation in March 1920 does not automatically mean that anyone listed had a WW1 "campaign service" Medal entitlement. The soldier could have been conscripted in 1918 but not served overseas before the end of hostilities - including hostilities in Russia 1919/20 - or been a 1919 or 1920 enlistment on regular army terms of service. Probably only definitive confirmation will be via service record at MOD - or perhaps check of General Service medals Index on Ancestry may turn him up pre 1939. Good Luck Steve Y
Hi, Don't know if you're still looking into this but got the following. Service number quoted is one digit different to yours but with unusual name guess it's the same. Using the above link to the army number search engine it suggests his original regiment was The Rifle Brigade. Not a lot but least it gives you potential DOB / other service number / other regiment to go at. First Name: Gw Surname: Thornton-Lane DOB: 1900-12-11 Further Information: Account: 11006. Item Code: ADH001204073 Service Number: 6908559 Primary Unit: Royal Artillery Archive Reference: surviving-wwi-service-records
Hi James, This is where I got the info........ Record Details for Gw Thornton-Lane (Royal Artillery) Paul
IMHO looks like FWR have just “harvested” the information from the pre 1901 MOD database. Mindful of previous critical FWR threads I will merely comment that I doubt there will be any more information behind their pay wall. Caveat emptor! Steve Y
