Watched it today. My thumb was hovering on the Delete button after 5 minutes when Pitt leaped off the tank onto the German on the white horse. I decided to hang with it to look at the terrific vehicles and nice sets. Action sequences were pretty good. Acting was awful awful awful. All the stereotypical American types were there except the guy named Brooklyn and they acted like sadistic psychos. "Domestic" sequence with the two German women was icky and insulting but I was able to fast forward. Pitt's 76mm duel with the Tiger was exciting but he didn't have to race all the way around behind it. He was only about 20 yards away and AP would have penetrated even the mantle at that range. Also the rear hull armor was 80mm, the same as the sides and back of turret.
For an educated audience the suspension of disbelief especially requires that you get some key aspects right. In Fury the characters were simply not compelling nor realistic. It broke down from there. It broke down completely with the SS who willingly walked to their doom against a single, immobilized Sherman. I would have preferred Oddball in the lead role. At least I would have laughed.
Like many vignettes in the film it is loosely based on a documented claim. This 'heroic' action has been lauded for years and taken as the gospel truth. I wonder if anyone will connect the dots?
