I watched it a couple of weeks ago.
I thought the sets, costumes and scenery were outstanding. The screenplay, not so much. It seems to be filled greatly with clichés and I was bored by the lover's interlude. I did not care for the final battle and found the premise to be far-fetched.

It's a film of entertainment, and compared with some of the other war films, was actually quite enjoyable.

I saw Fury a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it, especially the Tiger/Sherman duel. However the part that really spoiled it for me was the setting up of the final scene when he sent the young lad off to act as lookout. Notice that he did not have any binoculars, he sees this Company of elite SS soldiers approaching, marching along at a good pace. The lookout runs back to his tank , and then ages seem to pass for them to make their preparations. Did the SS company stop for a mug of ersatz coffee on the way? At least the director might have alluded to this or perhaps given the lookout a pair if bins so he could have seen the approach from further away. The other point of course was infantry support and air cover. But then there would have been no story.

Just watched it today and thought it was quite good in parts, especially the tank battles. Thought the ending was a bit cheesy when 200 Germans attack the tank crew and half them end up dead. Overall worth watching, although I doubt if I'll be getting the DVD when it comes out.

Finally watched Fury & overall found it to be quite a good movie. The real stars however were the tanks

"Tiger 131" from Bovington Tank Museum
Fury M4A2 76mm HVSS from Bovington Tank Museum
M4A2 75mm VVSS from Tay Restorations
M4A2 76mm HVSS from Jeep Sud Est
M4A4 75MM VVSS from Adrian Barrell
    M4A1 76mm VVSS

I found it very disturbing. So much in fact I hardly know what to say about it.

From the vehicle & equipment point of view it is awesome and some of the combat scenes are truly impressive. The rest is excrutiatingly clichéd and incredible.

The plot, if one can call it so, is insultingly stupid - one partly disabled Sherman wipes out a company of well equipped enemy troops. Interestingly enough, the film dutifully picks up the old paradoxical portrayal of the Waffen-SS soldiers as cream of the crop who do little else than frantically run into machine gun fire and get torn to bits.
The Germans are a pathetic bunch indeed: They cannot fight, they cannot shoot straight, and whatever they say is pointless or silly. They can die properly though - there are apparently no wounded, and survivors are helped to fulfill their role of good (i.e. dead) Germans with the aid of rifle butts and spades.

I cannot help feeling that FURY is little else than gore for the sake of gore rather than an honest attempt to depict of the horrors of war - it is a bleak and ultimately disreputable portrayal of the Americans who fought in Europe in 1944/45.

    Kate,

I have not got around to watching it yet, but from what has been said about it, the film is yet another typical Hollywood style film that is lacking in Factual Content.

The plus Point is that at least some effort was put into using Tanks that looked the part.

As usual the film was designed to pull in Money at the box Office, not for it's historical Facts.

    Regards
    Tom

Watch it. And tell me what you think of it, I'd like to hear your take.

The tanks are just about the only plus point - not sure whether it can make up for all the negative ones though.
It's John Wayne meets Saving Private Ryan meets Inglorious Basterds - and failing at all of them.

    Thanks for your opinions all.

Pretty much as I expected to be honest. Hollywood does end of WW2 and spends loads of money on authenticity but really does not understand the situation.

A true representation would not be 'saleable' as a major film and they have to invent scenes and scenarios to make it so.

Pay screen writers a lot of money for unbelievable situations, add some female involvement and some CGI.

Not convinced by the film but might go and see it if DVDs don't come out soon.

Do not waste your money on watching "Fury".

"A most wanted man", that IS a film that could be called realistic. It's about a small counter-terrorism unit.

:) Or "Life of Crime". Not so realistic, but funny.

I've still not seen it yet but everyone at work (who knows my interest in WW2) has asked if I've seen it and then proceed to tell me how brilliant it is. If nothing else it goes to show that the average movie goer is miles apart from the average WW2 geek. Knowing which one there is more of, it doesn't surprise me that Hollywood's market is aimed at the average movie goer to bring the money home - Either way I'm sure I'll enjoy it for what it is - A Hollywood war film, not enough of them being made in my opinion.

Tip, 'When Trumpets Fade', about the "atmosphere" in the Huertgen Forest, a forgotten battle.

It took three months and 24,000 thousand casualties to take the forest, end of 1944.

As previously said, the movie is all about the armoured stars. Too much realism is sacrificed in the name of entertainment and the Hollywood "Yee-Hah!" factor for my liking.

On one of the major negative notes.... When young Norman witnesses the SS Battalion march past, EVERY 3rd / 4th man has a Panzerfaust slung over his shoulder (about 150 - 200 men?). Fast forward to the battle scene. Two crates of Panzerfausts are thrown to the ground and cracked open. The commanding SS officer shouts "Make them count - This is all we have!". So the SS Battalion miraculously go from clearly having 30 / 40 Panzerfausts to having just 6.

Continuity please guys.... It ain't rocket science.

In the reality of such a situation at such a late stage of the war, the oncoming enemy forces would've at least been plastered with outgoing artillery at short notice and given the weather conditions close air support could (and probably would) have also been called upon almost immediately.

Another major error in my understanding. 4 Shermans are taken out and all "brew up" immediately. One man scrambles out ablaze and promptly shoots himself. Didn't tank crews have on average 6 seconds to bail out of a stricken tank before it brewed up? And statistically wouldn't more crew have been able to escape? Just me nit-picking, I guess.

On a plus note..... When they take the Pak 40 out with the phosphorus round. Oh. My. God!
