Looking for a full listt of regiments tat were in both the 50th Division and 51st Highland division. I understand that both were in my area of Lyons La Forêt and Fleury Sur Andelle in June 1940. I want to do some research on what went on here during that time.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

    Hello Alex,

I don't think 50 Div were anywhere near there in June 1940. Just to the south of Arras was probably the nearest they got. Most of 50 Div had been evacuated through Bray Dunes (and Dunkirk) by the night of 2 June 1940. Happy to be proved wrong...

The 50 Div overran the Mont Fleury Battery, near La Rivière, Normandy, on D-Day, June 1944. The 5th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment, 69th Infanrty Brigade, were the unit involved in that action.

    Best,

    Steve.

The 2nd Armoured Brigade HQ harboured for the night of 22 May 1940 near Martainville before moving further north the next morning.

The Queen's Bays harboured for the night of 22 May 1940 near Morgny before moving further north the next morning.

Both 9L and 10H passed by the Foret de Lyon on 24 May (without stopping) on the route Gisors-Gourney-Aumale.

General Altmayer's X Army HQ was located in Lyons-a-Foret in late May/early June 1940.

From 4 June 1940, the British No.17 Military Mission under Lt.General Marshall-Cornwell was also to be found in Lyons-a-Foret.

The 3rd Armoured Brigade HQ arrived late afternoon of 7 June in the Foret de Lyon but moved on again after just a few hours to a new location near Servaville/Martainville. They left there on the evening of 8 June.

The various sub-units 3rd Armoured Brigade (elements of 2RTR, 3RTR, QBays etc etc) passed through the area without stopping on 8 June coming from the river Andelle Line north of the Foret de Lyon to cross the Seine at Les Andelys. This movement may have included elements of scratch infantry battalions created by Beauman Division who were operating with 3ArmdBde.

During the night 7/8 June 1940, the Advanced HQ of 1st Armoured Division under Maj.General Evans moved into a location in the Foret de Lyons (precise location not stated) in order to be in close contact with the No.17 Military Mission and Altmayer's X Army HQ.

However, at dawn on 8 June, the French X Army HQ was found to have left having slipped away durning the night without telling anyone!!!!

Later that day, Lt.General Marshall-Cornwell took his No.17 Military Mission off to Evreux to be alonside Altmayer once more. The Advanced HQ of 1st Armoured Division under Maj.General Evans simalarly moved on to another location.

There is no indication that any units of either 50th or 51st Division were in the area you point to.

    Hope this helps...

Interesting to read whhat you said about the French 10th army. I believe general Weygand was here in June 1940.

I there any talk about heavyy bombing in 1940? I believe the Luftwaffe wanted to clear the forest of any French instalations.

As a Pole, I believe my grandfather, Andrzej Witold Brzeski who was in Polish Carpathian Brigade joined the 10th Husars later in the war.
