Hi, I am looking for some advice as to how I can try to find out something about 2579972, Sergeant Frank Douglas Meik, who served with the Royal Corps of Signals (TA) during the Second World War. Born in Cardiff in May 1897, he had already seen service in the First World War with the Royal Naval Air Service and then the RAF between 1916-1921 as an Air Mechanic (2&1) and then Aircraftman 1st Class. I have found his service papers for this period on line. I know that he re-enlisted on 28th February 1939 in the Royal Corps of Signals (Territorial Army). I have his British War and Victory Medals from the 1st World War, and also his Efficiency Medal (GVI) with bar Territorial. I am wondering if it is possible to try and get a general idea of where he may have served between 1939-1945, even if it was only in the UK, given that he would have been around 42 when the war broke out. I would be very grateful to any of the members of this forum for suggestions on where to look next and to find a date for the award of the Efficiency Medal. Thanks, Ceri.

Ceri, His service records should reveal when his Efficiency Medal was awarded although there may be a clue depending upon which George VI version it was.

"The first King George VI version was introduced after his succession to the throne in 1936 and has his effigy in coronation robes and wearing the Tudor Crown, facing left and circumscribed "GEORGIVS.VI.D.G.BR.OMN.REX.ET.INDIÆ.IMP".

"The second King George VI version was introduced after 1947, when his title "Emperor of India" was abandoned and reference to India was omitted from the medal inscription. The effigy on the obverse remained the same, but the circumscription was changed to "GEORGIVS.VI.DEI.GRA.BRITT.OMN.REX.FID.DEF:"

There is very little available on the web for WW2, unlike WW1 which you have already found. One source that is available are casualty lists (wounded, missing, POW, KIA) but his service number does not appear there.

    Good luck with your research.

Hi Tony, many thanks for your information. The Efficiency Medal is the first type, with "GEORGIVS.VI.D.G.BR.OMN.REX.ET.INDIÆ.IMP". Cheers, Ceri.
