1. SYLLING In the early hours of 09/04/1940 German forces invaded major cities in Southern Norway, including its capital Oslo. Sunderland L 2167 from 210 sqd took off from Invergordon at midday for recce over Oslo. They performed a wide photo sweep over the city and probably took fire from German ships in the Oslo Harbour. Two Me-110s from Fornebu airport finished the aircraft off and it exploded in mid-air at appr 9 000 feet. The wreckage fell down onto a steep hill side near the little village of Sylling, west of Oslo. Miraculously one of the crew of ten, Flt Serg Ogwyn George, survived the crash. Please see this thread: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-air/25244-first-british-casualties-norwegian-campaign.html The nine deceased crewmembers were all buried at the local Sylling cemetery. Three weeks later they were joined by another allied aviator. See bottom of post. Sylling is a very small village and the ten WW2 graves stand out in the tiny churchyard. 70 years on, the locals tend to the graves with great respect. Every year on 17th of May, Norway’s much celebrated day of independence, there is a procession to the churchyard and local children decorate the war graves with wild flowers. Stirling L J 9705970 from 620 sqdn took off at 1742 on 28/12/1944, detailed for Special Operations. 620 squadron was at this time stationed at Great Dunmow and occasionally performed supply drops over Holland and Norway. The aircraft was shot down by a German fighter at 2330 near Sande Railway Station . It exploded on impact with ground and all seven crewmembers died. Items reported found on the wreck site by locals (containers with weapons, clothing and food) suggest that the a/c was inbound on its mission when shot down. The deceased aircrew were all buried at the local cemetery in Sande. It was one of 52 aircraft taking part in Operation Gardening, detailed to lay mines in the Silverthon area- Kiel bay and the Danish coast. Nothing was heard from the aircraft and it failed to return to base. It was presumed that the aircraft had crashed in the sea, with the loss of all crewmembers. The cause of the crash was never established. View attachment 68257 The body of F/Sgt Oliver, the pilot, was washed ashore on the Norwegian coast. He was buried in Larvik, Norway. Yesterday, during Norway's big independence day celebrations, Flt Serg Maynard's grave in Moss was honoured: Heidi Morell Andresen held a very good speech giving a precise and adequate backdrop of the mission where Maynard was lost. (Se earlier posts for details.) She emphasized the fact that Maynard was the only one of the crew to be recovered, making them symbols for all the allied soldiers who lost their lives, often over foreign soil, for our generation to be able to live in peace. She concluded her speech with *Kjemp for alt hva du har kjært, dø om så det gjelder* To conclude the ceremony the local men's choir sang 'God Save The Queen'
