I wasn't completly accurate about the RAF chap.....His claims were about the legality of the war not his religion. BBC NEWS | UK | Jail for Iraq refusal RAF doctor Looks like chap should get off the service rather than trying to disobey orders which followed to his punishment, jail and dishonor as a soldier.
If you take the Queens shilling expect to do the work sometimes Yep, so you either take and do or take no and don't B)
Reminds me of Jihad Johnny (Johnny Jihad??), only difference is the US army caught him. Thanks for sharing the 9th Company link, it definetly caught my attention, will drop by HMV or Blockbuster tomorrow. Edit: Stuff like this happens in almost every conflict, people either leave or are left behind, out of those some try to return while others bit their lip and dig in. I'm actually suprised no "Onnada" type cases have popped up regarding other wars/conflicts, unless I missed someone.
Just been reading up on the battle for Hill 3234 . Battle for Hill 3234 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Will watch 9 POTA tomorrow when I have house to myself. Watched all the bonus features on the 2nd disc and it looks a bloody amazing film.
I've had 9th Battalion for a while now and have never got round to watching it....I guess I should unwrap it Company
A little excerpt from our discussion on facebook: The point in 'invasion' to Afghanistan was to support so-called 'April revolution' made by Afghan Democratic Party, not the conquer the country - it was clear that its impossible as history tells. Unfortunately our allies - those afghan communists was too stupid to embroil with its own people by perfoming some reforms on rural economy (that made millions of pesants very poor) and doing repressions that gave people to the hands of radical islamic fractions. USSR's 40th Army did well what it was moved there for - supported allied government for 10 years, but in that 10 years many things changed - and changed leaders of USSR that were declared 'war in Afghanistan was unnecessary' that brought thousands of soldiers and officers to make thinking they were fighting for nothing, this is changed opinion of people about Afghanistan war etc. etc.
I thought it a really good movie. The subtitles were no problem, I actually forgot about them very quickly. Some good characters in the film. Lots of genuine Soviet kit of course which was good to see. I loved the shots of the BMP crew in the convoy, faces showing utter boredom. The first part of the film reminded my slighty of Full Metal Jacket, only because it showed their training & their arrival in Afghanistan reminds me of the beginning of Platoon with the FNGs meeting the Vets going home. I suppose that shows , no matter what Nationality you are the basics of war are the same. Thanks again to Kieron for the heads up .
Going to watch this avo Check out the footage in the 'Making of the film' section of the dvd: some great shots of AFVs thrashing up and down mountain tracks. Also suggests that Health and Safety is just not a factor on set in Russia!
Glad you liked Owen I think I'll watch it again tonight its been a couple of months since I last watched it .
How long was that film ? I wondered if it would ever end. In short a Russian Vietnam film. Like Owen said very accurate on the kit front but a bit too long for my liking. I'm glad someone managed to shoot the Afgan porn star with the sunglasses. Well worth a watch 6/10 from me. Cheers Andy
Ah found the old thread about former Soviet soldiers still in Afghanistan. Just found news story on this chap. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/05/soviet-soldier-found-living-afghanistan
