Interesting article about two former Soviet soldiers who still live in Afghanistan. BBC NEWS | World | South Asia | Afghanistan's Soviet remnants in the north-eastern town of Kunduz, I met Private Alexander Levenets and Gennady Tseuma, two village boys from Ukraine, former teenage conscripts. The AFV buffs amongst you will like the Soviet scrap-yard in the second video.
Good article, have to say that its a common story about russian soldiers became muslims when caught by mujahideen in Afghanistan. Sadly there was only small number of 'em from all amount of captured by mujahideen - most of 'em were tortured or killed. Let 'em RIP.
Alex, Was there many Muslim Soldiers in the Soviet Army at the time of Afganistan? As far as I know - if there were any - they didn't show their religion a lot, u know that religion was hiding in USSR and was not officially permitted. Also I might consider that government tried not to send soldiers from USSR regions where muslims is wide spread historically, like Tatarstan for example or Caucasus, but I have no facts to prove it, just my opinion.
Alex, Was there many Muslim Soldiers in the Soviet Army at the time of Afganistan? And your question inspired me for question for you: do UK have muslims in army? And does it send it to Iraq or Afghanistan? Were there any cases when such soldiers passed to enemies?
Can't remember his name but I do remember seeing a newspaper story about a Muslim Bootneck. Royal Marine.
Can't remember his name but I do remember seeing a newspaper story about a Muslim Bootneck. Royal Marine. Looks like single case, because I think government should not send muslims fight with muslims even if its not a religious warfare at all, religion can take over any citizenship, that's worst of it.
Completely off topic but I watch a film the other day called 9th Company set around a hill held by Soviet soldiers against Afghan rebels in 1988 apparently based on a true story. I was really impressed with this film and rate it up there with Backhawk Down...don't watch if there are any distractions because it has English subtitles, but its still a good film. Back to topic didn't this also happen to alot of American soldiers in vietnam?
I thought the Yanks just left alot of blue-eyed, blonde-haired children to Vietnamese mothers . <3 Keiron is this it? 9th Company edit Just bought it from Play.com
YES, YES and YES! I highly recommend 9th Company to be watched because its only modern Russia movie about Afghanistan, and is not filled with any kind of propaganda or political stuff, although this means that somewhere it shaken russian society because showed life and war in Afghanistan in some strange angles, there was lots of talks in press and internet when this movie came to screens. Anyway, this movie, especially its battle scenes, became my fav. Please watch and leave comments, I'd like to discuss it deeply.

I just remember reading somewhere that a few American soldiers went AWOL and remained remained in Vietnam when the war was over. The film as I said is good, It follows a group of young conscripts from joining up, training and then being sent off to Afghan...I will not say much as Owen has just purchased the film and that wouldn't be fair, but it has some real good angels and in places very deep. It gets five stars from me *****

In addition have to say that last scene of movie nocked my feelings very well, should get a copy and rewatch it with my 5.1 system.
Will watch it as soon as it arrives. My wife bought me an American war film as a pressie, it just doesn't interest me. So much rather see a Russian one.
Alex, Yes we do have soldiers in the British Army who following Islam. Infact there was a chap a few years ago who was in the Intelligence Corp who was killed in Afganistan (Around 2004/5 I think) who's family originated from Pakistan. I vaguely remember a officer in the RAF who was a Muslim who refused to go to Iraq in 2003 (pre invasion). I may be wrong I think he was court marshalled-I don't know the outcome though. The MOD has personnel from all faiths I believe. I know the Chaplain's Dept has religious leaders of the Christian (C of E and Catholic) Jewish, Mulsin and I believe Hindu faith....I'd have to check to confirm. Maybe have a look on the MOD website Just looked and it doesn't list faiths outside of what appears to various forms of Christianity for some reason.
