Lesley, Thanks for posting in the first instance. These are always such sad stories and something Airmen had to suffer more than most at the hands of the Japanese, once Allied bombers began to reach the Japanese mainland and cause such devastation the retaliation against POW's was brutal in the extreme.
And people want us to make friends and build bridges of peace with our fathers enemies. The three f's spring to mind Forgive - Yes , to forgive means I live with no hatred in my heart Forget - Never, to forget means my fathers suffering was meaningless Friends. To make friends with strangers because their fathers were my fathers enemies makes no sense to me. The more I learn the more I feel our lads that answered their countries call were in the end treated cruelty by the enemy and let down big time by those that ruled .Arse.....s lot of em and if we ever have another conventional war I hope our lads tell em to shove it and tell the politicians to pick up a gun and go fight it themselves , there is enough of them.
