Details of the following casualty have this morning been submitted to the folks at the 'In From the Cold Project'. Hopefully Ian Coupe will be added to the CWGC register.

The death occurred after a long illness, on Monday week, of Flight Sergeant Ian George Coupe, elder son of Captain and Mrs. George Coupe, of 42 Moor Road, Orrell, Wigan, and formerly of Widnes. Twenty five years of age, the deceased young man joined the R.A.F. in September 1934, and was discharged last year through disability caused by present activities. Many Widnes friends have extended their sympathy to the parents in their sad loss and the untimely end of a very promising career.

Harry, Fred, Allen and Maurice Coupe, and Mr. J. Roberts, Uncles; Mrs. H. Rodgers, Mrs. J. Roberts, Mrs. F. Coupe and Mrs. M. Coupe aunts; Mr. and Mrs. G.V. Rodgers, cousins.

The general mourners included; Mr. and Mrs. McLaren (Liverpool), Mrs. Davies (Orrell), Mr. R. Roberts, J.P., Mr. E. Price, Mrs. J. Pemberton, Mr. C. Bill, and Mrs. M. Carroll.

I have tried submitting a couple of similar cases (member died following discharge) to the CWGC via the OAWG here in Australia with no luck.

I presume this submission will hinge on the fact that he "was discharged last year through disability caused by present activities" - I think if the death can be directly linked to his military service then there should be a strong case for his inclusion by the CWGC.

Is there any available detail on what caused his illness leading to his discharge? I couldn't find him on Flight Global as Wounded in Action or Injured on Active Service etc - I suppose they don't have a heading for contracted a disease during service........

Seeing he died of TB, it would have to be proved that he contracted it from another RAF member or at a RAF base wouldn't they?

Not up with how this works though.

Dave / Spidge, you are exactly right, so its not cut and dried. I will see what the CWGC say 1st of all, and then if need by apply for a copy of his service record. Hopefully that will include details for his reason of discharge.
