Some piccys of my School Trip to Flanders. First a view of Tyne Cot British Cemetry. I found this headstone commemorating a VC recipient. Another view of Tyne Cot Photo of Langemarke German Cemetry. Notice the different headstones. Taken at Langemarke and my favourite photo of the trip Landscape of Vimy Ridge Scale of a German pillbox entance in comparison to a friend Looking over at the British trenches. Gives an idea of how close they were. Vimy memorial from the Canadian information centre. The memorial from the front Well there has to be at least one group photo. See if you can spot me (some of you have seen me enough times before). Back of the Vimy Memorial Thiepval Memorial Looking at the British and Fench graves At the cross overlooking the Lochnagar Crater Looking into the crater. Look at the people on the other side for idea of the size. Newfoundland Caribou Cemetry full of Newfoundland soldiers and men from my family regiment, The Gordon Highlanders. The 'Danger Tree' Looking down the centre of the cemetry The Menin Gate
A reminder that it was a World War with troops from all over the Empire Group photo at Sanctuary Wood (Hill 62). Again points for spotting me. Me on the left with a friend by an old Artillery peice. Anyone know what type of gun it is? A friend at the exit to one of the tunnels on Sanctuary Wood A tree stump I found in Sanctuary Wood. Exhausted on the way home
Nice one Alex. Looks like you all had a good and interesting time (Bet your teachers didn't even mention, never mind take you to any of the WW2 battle sites within a few miles of most of the pics you posted though!). Wish that I had such trips when I was at school! (all we got was Boulogne or Calais (OK for the budding 1940 buff that I was, but ,apart from the war museum in Calais, I never had enough time to see anything relevant - & the trade in flicknives and French bangers was far too important anyway!!!) on the run-up to Christmas when the teachers needed to top up on their cheapo booze supply!) Dave
Nice photos Alex. Hope you enjoyed the trip as well as "Remembering." I could tell you what the artillery piece is, seen it enough times. Er.....it's just that I've forgotten. I'm getting older and brain cells are dying.
