Blimey. We used to travel down to see 'em when in port at Pompey - one on it's own was always quite a sight.

I saw the JFK in St Maartens in 1999 and it just filled the entrance to Big Bay, the Nimitz class is a different scale altogether.
there are six flat-tops in that image....so which is the non-Carrier? I think the one forth from the left in a helicopter carrier, but I'm not sure.
there are six flat-tops in that image....so which is the non-Carrier? Two more in the upper right of the photo. They look like Wasp class assault ships.

What was the name of your ship? I'd like to read up on her. Did you come into Pearl Harbor next to an Essex class? The Oklahoma and Arizona must have been awful sites at the time.

Blimey. We used to travel down to see 'em when in port at Pompey - one on it's own was always quite a sight. This^^ It was a big treat to go see family and to see one of the aircraft carriers in port. The biggest treat was to go on a boat ride round them. I whish i new where the photos were. My brothers still has his JFK cap. I don't think any thing will happen to the ships as it would take a tac nuke to take them down.

Please don’t say you are rambling. I appreciate everything you wrote and wish you would write more! Your post has enough information in it to start several threads. If you would like to write about it, I’d love to read about your passages through the Panama Canal. Steaming through the lakes surrounded by green jungles must have been really beautiful, if the weather was good. Being in New York City on VE would be another thing I’d like to hear about. Of course the famous picture of the sailor kissing the nurse comes to mind! Did you see the capsized Normandie when you where there? She was in the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan. You probably docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on the East River but there were plenty of navy ships on the Hudson as well. I’d also like to hear about the voyages bringing the service brides to the Bahamas and what life on board was like for them. I can’t speak for other members but I think many of them would also like to hear anything you have to say. Thanks again, Dave. H.M.S. REAPER H.M.S. PATROLLER
I am willing to suspect that if Mr. Bernard saw a heavily damaged carrier in New York Harbor, it could very well have been the USS Franklin (CV-13), as she was there from June 1945 on, beginning her repairs. I don't think any other severely damaged carrier went as far back as New York. Most went to Ulithi or the US west coast.
Anyone know if this a normal occurrence? Five out ten carriers next to each other. Seems one 'big one' would get them all Five Carriers in Norfolk | USNI News A very good time to own a bar in Norfolk. 30,000 sailors in port at one time! And an equally bad time to be an MP.
It looks like the two fartherest carriers are in port for an extended time. There are portable buildings on the flight decks. I am wondering that they may only have a skeleton crew. EDIT Looking at the photo more closely, The closer ones also have portable buildings and/or containers on the decks.
hy dave 55,thank you for your answer.it was good to see the minnis again.i have pitures of them.allso just for conversasion.my brother was on the h.m.s attaker.and other ships?you will find the attaker.where you found the reaper and the patroler.did you find the pictures of there transformation into cargo/passenger ships.and there final demise?its ashame they had to breack them up in the end, they survived ww2.as for storys.i was a cook.i was on what you would call a rotating gun crew, when action stations sounded, you would go like hell from down below the hangar deck.up through the close off haches.into the hanger and up a near vertical ladder to your gun station.on the patroller i was on the port side.up forward.as you may see on your pictures.the gun emplacement.below and alongside the flight deck.our station was twin orlikans .and no matter how long you spent there.when the allclear went you carried on in the galley until all was ship shape.nothing wonderfull happend to me.great mates.i sailed with some when we went back to pease time m.n. just for your interest.all the catering staff(or crew) were.t124x article.well here we go again having a ranble.see you later.have a good one. bernard85

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)? I thought it was against policy to name a vessel for a living person. They seem to break it from time to time to time to time......................................
