Hi & welcome If you do not already have service records for your father then here is the link - Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK - just in case he moved regiments. TD
Welcome, I have an interest in 6 RWK and their time at Cassino in 1944. Do you know which battalion your father was with and when he served? I have a copy of the Regimental History on my shelf, so let us know and I can get you the basics with ease.
Hello my dad was in the 6th RWK,he said very little about it. He mentioned some snippets about his time in Africa, and little of Italy but never Cassino.
I have some of the War Diaries for 6RWK in 1944. They only cover a few months but they're packed full of information. If you would like me to search for any reference to him, just post a name/rank/number--whatever you have. There is one publication solely on 6RWK, but it costs a bomb:
I've skimmed over the Jan-April 1944 Diaries and although a very large number of Private soldiers are listed, your father is not. That doesn't mean that he wasn't there, but it does hint in that direction. I'll also note that there were a very large number of courts martial for the battalion during that period--mostly for absence, desertion and refusing a lawful order.
I have a letter sent by him to his mum with 6th RWK on it so I'm a bit confused, but I guess they moved troops where they wanted.
Interesting--do you have dates for any of this? As I say, I have the Regimental History so even if only 'snapshots' I can probably locate him for you once I know a date and a battalion. Edit: I only meant that he may not have been with 6RWK for those four months that the diaries cover. My own grandfather was away from his unit and in hospital for two months.
