My fear with Maus is that it'd either be made as a 'standard' animation, which would be rather dull in comparison, (and I just can't see Spiegelman approving of (if he's still alive?)); Or as an overly arty live action film with the pig/sheep/mouse/dog/cat metaphor carried out with masks. Neither could have the emotional impact of the Originals' digressions and the family references would have to be narrated, they work so well in the book but could be a little forced in another form.

It certainly wouldn't be easy, and I agree that there is a chance that a film version might ruin it, but I personally would love to see an animated version, because if nothing else it would be unique and extraordinary. It would be a film inspired entirely by a man's memory of a shocking time, in a format which is socially and emotionally acceptable.
In many ways I could imagine it being more effective than standard films.

Animation can be a very powerful medium: the animated Shakespeares you have refered to were quite something to watch. I recall being amazed by the imagery in the Macbeth and Tempest tales. Very powerful and striking.
However for use in a WW2 tale, maybe, but it would need to be handled very carefully. There is a Japanese Anime War/Armageddon film by Studio Ghibli that is quite harrowing. In the West we are used to animation as a childrens entertainment, witnessing a massacre on a battlefield in that medium may be too much for the Western mind, but not for the Eastern where they have never viewed Animation as purely for the kiddies.
Again there is a fine balance that needs to be maintained and only the most skillful of directors/animators could manage that.
As to the Holocaust and Auschwitz, is it any surprise no-one wants to see a film of what haoppend there? It is just too horrific to entertain thenotion. Yes, peiopel watch horror films, but they are fiction. Putting what happened at Auschwitz and the other camps onto film is too much; there we know it happened. We as humans did that. No, it wouldn't work. Schindlers list is about as far as we can go.

Um well that is fairly terrifying prospect... but I certainly will do so if someone could tell me how? I'll do so tomorrow when it's finished.

I always thought that if you wanted to do realism, you shouldn't focus on gore so much-that often does less toward teaching people and more toward titilating their sadism. The thing to show would be foraging, unlucky peasants, petty service indignities, dirty clothes, boredom, and so on. This sort of thing would probably give a fairly good picture as far as "showing what it's like". However as the idea is to make money, people go to be entertained and that does not sound entertaining, obviously enough, it is a bit of a hard time.
I do a spy-story series from the period on myspace. And even as an amateur storyteller I know how difficult it is to get it right about such things. And not least of the difficulties is being realistic and entertaining.
