Does anyone have a copy of 'Fighter Pilot' to hand? The book is available via Amazon but I'd first like to know whether there's a picture of Fl Lt HNE ('Sammy') Salmon, who in 1940 was serving with one of the fighter squadrons deployed in France during the Phoney War. I know that I saw a picture of him somewhere with a group of other pilots and believe it may have been in this book. The picture, as far as I recall, was of a group of men in front of a hut. I'd greatly appreciate help in this matter. Thanks in advance. M
Many thanks for the pic ... that shows him and I'll get the book. However, the shot that I remember was of him standing in a group, as I said earlier, perhaps in front of a hut. M
Thanks again for your help but that's unfortunately not the picture that I remember. I think that it was in France in 1940. I may have a photocopy with some text and this could help to identify the book in question. M
Bring on the challenge! I’m away from home (and thus my book collection) but I’ll enjoy the root around when I get back. Billy Drake Fighter Leader by Christopher Shores and Squadrons Up by Noel Monks will be my first ports of call.
Just edited my post of 'Thursday' above - I see that I omitted the 'not' (!) ... the text should have read "but that's unfortunately not the picture that I remember." Do you happen to have a copy of 'Yellow Belly' by John Newton Chance (published by Robert Hale, 1959? There's a bit about him in that ... I have a copy of the text. But I'm wondering whether the picture that I had (but cannot now find!) was in 'Yellow Belly'. Salmon was with No 1 Squadron in France in 1940. If you don't have this book, I can start another thread. Thanks in advance - M
Hi, no that's not one I've got. I should get a chance to leaf through the others I've mentioned tonight and will let you know if anything looks plausible.
Hi, I've checked the books I mentioned plus AASF by Charles Gardener. Plenty of pics, but none matching your description i'm afraid.
