Wow!!! That is inspiring. I don't know when I have seen as moving a memorial. thanks for sharing. phil
Thanks for posting Paul. Very moving to see, esp as we had requested one of those poppies in commemoration of 2 brothers killed in May 1915. Great photos.
Hi Paul Great photos. I managed to get to Ieper on Wednesday for the evening Menin Gate ceremony. I thought the Poppy Field was stunning but it was getting toward dark and my photos really don't do it justice. Do you have a photo you can post and share of the lawns up by the Ramparts looking toward the Menin Gate as that was just a mass of the Remembrance poppies? Thanks Jim
Paul When I showed my bride the images, she asked if I knew how many poppies were used. I offered that it was likely the 20,000+ names that are on the memorial. Do you have any details on this? cheers, phil
Great pictures Paul...It towers over the London Field of Remembrance. Phil....Here's some shots from inside Menin Gate taken a month or so ago: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-cemeteries-war-memorial-research/22243-menin-gate-pictures-2009-a.html There are over 50,000 names engraved inside the monument who have no known grave. Regards Andy
As Andy mentioned there are 55,000 names on the Menin Gate. The poppies were placed there by those that sponsored them - the number isn't in relation to the number of names on the Gate. However, there were 1000s of them!
I mis-read the Wiki material on the Menin Gate. I had interpreted it to mean they were going to put 55K and ran out of room after 20K and put the other 34K on Tyne Cot. I sit corrected. And the image is absolutely awe inspiring! What I mis-read: "Its large Hall of Memory contains the names of 54,896 Commonwealth soldiers who died without graves, cut into vast panels. On completion of the memorial, it was discovered to be too small to contain all the names as originally planned. An arbitrary cut-off point of 15 August 1917 was chosen and the names of 34,984 UK missing after this date were inscribed on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing instead. The Menin Gate Memorial does not list the names of the missing of New Zealand and Newfoundland soldiers, who are instead honoured on separate memorials." cheers. phil
A couple of photos of the Poppies from the Ramparts back towards the Menin Gate. A bit dark, sorry, but you can see how impressive it is Jim
