There are a good number of publications by and about Wavell (some pertaining to the Great War--Allenby and the Palestine Campaign, if I recall correctly), but to confine ourselves to the Second World War, these are the most commonly cited biographical works (the first two being somewhat hagiographical):

These are publications of his wartime essays, speeches and broadcasts:

Also of possible interest is his published diary as Viceroy of India:

Though his most famous book has to be this collection of poems:

I may be blaspheming, but I have never understood why Wavell has such a high reputation. His record in the Far East was terrible, and it has always seemed to me that others (O'Connor, Lavarack) really deserved most of the credit for Middle East Command's early victories. What am I missing? Do people like him just because he was more intellectual and literary than generals usually are?

I came across this the other day: Wavell & his staff (no date):

That's his ADC Major Alexander Reid Scott MC to his left (right as we view it).

I can't figure out whether any of them are Peter Coats (another ADC, shown below).
