Originally posted by angie999@Dec 1 2004, 03:57 AM The worst? A whole batch of bad ones made in the late 1960s/1970s: Kelly's Heroes, Hannibal Brooks, a stupid Roger Moore film based on a Greek island and a POW film based on England's 1966 World Cup team plus Pele. More recent, Pearl Harbor, Thin Red Line and the Hollywood version of capturing an Enigma. .........oh yes, and I don't care for The Sound of Music either. [post=29752]Quoted post[/post] Roger Moore was in Escape to Athena. How David Niven said yes to this was amazing. The other was "Victory". A star cast - escapist movie. What a waste! Did you see/like "Under Ten Flags" with Van Heflin & Charles Laughton?
Best: Band of Brothers, A Bridge too far, Das Boot, SPR, Tuntematon Sotilas (finnish movie: Unknown Solider), Stalingrad, Enemy at the gates and The Guns of Navarone Worst: Pearl Harbour and The thin red line /petke
Saving Private Ryan???? Are you kidding me? That movie was so 'Hollywood' I wanted to puke!!!! Several things in that movie were just wrong or cheesy. Let's start at the beginning...What was up with the sandbags literally exploding when Jackson shoots the mgers??? Never did figure out that one And when the group started cross country in search of Ryan...A trained group of soldiers would never start chatting, smoking, laughing while just casually strolling through enemy infested country I mean come on Spielberg!!! Were there not military advisors on that film??? The group disobeying orders constantly and pulling guns on each other at one point was all tripe. I would have to think that if a bar man pulled his gun at a sgt., the sgt. would have dumped him with his .45, you can't afford mavericks in combat, he would have been made an example of I would think. The storming of the mg guarding the radar installation was laughable...The medic would have never started up the hill with the rest of the assault group, and that wussy Upham would have been made to charge with the rest of them. And you would have never, ever let that German just walk away!! He would have been greased on the spot, especially after he was partially responsible if not totally responsible for killing the medic. When they let him walk, I wanted to walk too, out of the theater. Hey Spielberg! Stick to extra terrestrial movies you dolt! <_< The coup-de-grace of the movie for me was when that P-51(which was not a tankbuster as Ryan states, that role was given more to the P-47) dropped a 500lb. bomb on the tank that was only about 20 yards away from Miller. In reality that bomb would have blown the tank to smithereens along with the bridge and Miller would have been a fine pink mist. The movie is overly sentimental patriotic malarky!! A good story, yes, but full of Hollywood baloney. I would much rather read a good factual book on WWII or buy some REAL combat footage from WWII of which there is a multitude to select from.
Favorites: A Bridge Too Far, If only for the Airborne drop scenes and the attack of the Irish Guards. Band of Brothers was good too. Worst: Windtalkers-Great opportunity to tell one of the more obscure stories of WW II, but it turned into Nicholas Cage showing what a hero he is. Pearl Harbor was bad, with The Battle of Britian taking place in 1941.
Last post was August but I thought I'd add my favorites anyway. My favorites are:- Battle of Britain followed by Westerplatte (I guess this one does not mean much to people outside Poland) Marek
Best movie ever? Patton! This was one of the few times Hollywood got it right. A close second would be U-571, a historically accurate film where it shows the US sailors and US marines capturing the enigma machine that saved the Allies in WWII. I am in to the ones that stay true to history. Worst? Dambusters. Come on people, that never happened. Who made that up? Please... A second worse was Battle of Britain. They expect us to believe that RAF pilots shot down all those German planes without USAAF help? No one would believe that. Hollywood should remake that film and put a little realism in it.

The British captured the Enigma machine from the U-boat as depicted in U-571, although it is still a good movie, it is not accurate. Patton I agree is a good film and I enjoyed Battle of Britain even if it was unrealistic.

Gnomey is right. images/smilies/default/tongue.gif It was an evil thing to do. images/smilies/default/ph34r.gif I don't know what made me do it. You UKians are so earnest sometimes it is like talking at a funeral so I thought I would get the party rolling. It's hard to believe you folks are the ones that produced Benny Hill, Monty Python and The Office. I certainly stirred the pot well didn't I? How did you like that comment about the BofB not possible without USAAF? It thought that one would get certain folks really wound up. But Gnomey perceived how ridiculous it was and figured it out so the jig is up, although I think I could have gotten more mileage out of it. Thanks Gnomey! Actually I liked Band of Brothers because it was least embellished since it was a story told by the actual folks fighting. Patton was an entertaining movie but it was obviously played to the US crowd. I didn't know the US had M-60 tanks in WWII. No wonder Patton moved so fast across Normandy. I will try to refrain from using the "wooden spoon" in the future. Like they say, the more you stir it the worse it stinks.
(jimbotosome @ Nov 6 2005, 05:03 PM) [post=41162]How did you like that comment about the BofB not possible without USAAF? [/b] You are, of course, absolutely right. We Brits cannot do a thing unless we are having our hand held. Nice one! C'mon lads, can't we take a joke? Keep stirring, Jim.
The U-571 movie is always good for a nibble. Taking place with USN and US Marines is such an affront to the brave British lads that really catured the first one, most WWII pundits, especially the British ones, simply can't let that one go by without a strike. That would have been a good movie had the thing have been RN oriented and using British actors. Of course you folks don't have an actor to play the role Bon Jovi played. He made the movie for me. (careful folks, that one is tongue and cheek too). Nice to know that we in the States are not the only ones that resent Hollywood. U-571 might have been hitting below the belt but I had already ranged them so I just had to "fire for effect". I thought about adding that Saving Private Ryan was good because it was based on actual events accurately reproduced but I thought that might cause Stich to blow a blood vessel and I didn't want to compromise anyone's health. (I'm not that evil!) Stich actually made some really good points about that movie. Sorry folks. That's a bloody Yank for you. I believe the two best day's in a British soldier's life in WWII was the day the Yanks arrived and they day they left.
In my opinion, the greatest WW2 movies are ''The Dirty Dozen'' and ''A Bridge Too Far''. Each tells stories of true accounts and courageous acts.
Er, 'The Dirty Dozen' is totally fictional (and nasty to boot). It's apparently vaguely based on an actual plan to use convicts as commandos but the real 'Dozen' seem to have deserted at the first opportunity. I think it's the only war film I've ever seen where I wanted the Germans to win. As discussed elsewhere, 'Bridge too Far' has its moments but ultimately portrays the British as brave but idiotic, letting down the stalwart Yanks who carry out their part of the plan efficiently. As recent books on the battle (eg Robin Neillands) have shown, this is a simplistic caricature. Interestingly, 'Darling' Dickie Attenborough has been involved in a couple of projects pushing the same anti-British viewpoint-notably 'Oh, What a Lovely War' and 'The Great Escape'. I think they should take his knighthood away for treason.
